In the 1920s, racers used rear hubs with a single-speed freewheel on one side and a fixed cog on the other. To change gears, the racers dismounted, removed the rear wheel, turned it around and installed it again. As long as all racers did this, it did not matter if they lost time every time they shifted gears.
