2010 bike week

Did the climb up mt cootha at midnight last night with a few mates on my normal gearing. Too hard walked about half way up. Gonna run fixed/fixed with easy gear on other side and swap over at the bottom and top of the hill.

climbing fixed isnt really the problem. Its coming down the other side fixed that worries me.

how did everyone go?

Did the 30km ride to support a less-fit friend on his return to riding a bike since breaking bones mountain biking and then having a child. The tunnel was good at the start, you could get up a decent head of steam / spin down there. The climb out wasn’t bad either, although it did get quite warm.

Didn’t see too many other fixed gears down my end of things, a few SS though…

I done it on my roady. though I saw a fair few fix/ss’s out there…

yeah the tunnel was good… fast!
cruised along at 71kmh for a bit there… would have been
good to get on the back of a pack.
Apparantly the 30kmh+ guys were hitting 82k!
I thourght the climb out would have been tougher,
looks steeper in car…
It sure did get hot towards the end. The gush of cool air 50m before the exit
was welcome!

Cootha was good as well. Little dissapointed though…
I wanted to hit 90kmh going down, but got to the bottom and noticed
89kmh on my cpu!!!
The winner was 19yr old and nailed it 6:58m! holy shit!!

Full face on the peugeot did not make it this year. (working)
Any one doing it fixed should post their times

or shall we just let JB hold the record from last year

full face

I did the 45 with a couple of friends on SS.
The single best moment for me was having the police stop the traffic, so that we could turn onto Milton Rd. The amount of horn blowing and abuse was incredible.
We just waved and shouted “we are having an awesome day, you should write to the Courier Mail if you have any concerns”.

did the 80km with my mate mark both fixed… sorry goose lost you just before the tunnel as I lost my tool kit off the bike and had to ride back and get it… getting out of bed to do the ride after being in bed for 4 days was crook but was good to get out on the bike… ran out of lungs/legs on the steep sections of the climb and ended up walking sections (running normal gearing) … a slow 21mins for me… but the whole ride was good… didn;t see anyone else fixed.

i loved/hated the tunnel, loved it because it was a good ride in/out, but hated it because it was hot and the air was thick/dirty

Did the 45 on my Berretto SS. Was pretty cool all round. The tunnel was pretty good fun and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. Hung out with a couple of roadies in hawain shirts for a bit (good to see some of them have a sense of humour). Didn’t see many fixies - two flash looking Charge bikes. Also bloke on a carbon SS roadie (nice !!). But the best was an 80s vintage fluro Kenevans roadie with the pilot sporting red leather high cut Vans. Style master !!

Worth the $50 I reckon.

I did the 80km on the roadie. Got a fair speed through the tunnel which was heaps of fun. Great as we got held up at the start so I had a clear path to jump into top gear and give it all I had (sadly not much quicker than 70kph though). Hardly noticed the climb out. It was damn hot though! Hit the bottom of the climb well and pretty much stayed on the middle line the whole way up so I could easily pass the rest of the bunch. Happily I only got overtaken by 3 other riders.

Time for the climb was 10:09. Getting it into the 9:30 mark will be something to aim for next year I think. I’m thinking of volunteering next year though as I was really happy with how many people were doing marshaling and making our ride safe and easy. The cow bell on one of the steep pinches later in the day was a good laugh.

Does anybody know who the person was with matching leather saddle, suede bar tape and Horse Polo helmet? They were a standout for me.
The amount of old guys, riding classic/vintage steel roadies was great to see. I saw a couple of Kenevans, 2 Van Werkoven, a Viner and numerous other beautiful bikes.

Did the climb fixed with 12.30 something and the rest ss. Could done a faster climb with some more focused hill training…oh well maybe next year…dunno about these events though lots of slow ppl out to the right :?

Yeah I had to cross over to the right lane a lot to get around people. One guy was lying down on the left shoulder absolutely exhausted and accidentally kicked his bike over. Luckily everyone was far enough away from it, but it could have caused a fair bank up if it had of hit someone. I just kept yelling “on your right” the whole way up and most seemed to get the message. I think it was the first time a lot of people had done Cootha which causes a lot of problems because climbing a mountain ain’t nothing like freewheeling along at 30km/h in a bunch.

ha, I rode the whole way up in the right hand side gutter… way less steep!
