JUnior commuter’s just turned 11 and he’s a bit of a beanpole, he’s starting to look like some kind of weird elastic spider monkey on his BMX. He wants something bigger but wants to stay SS so we’re thinking maybe going to 24" ?
any suggestions/recommendations/sources for framesets & wheel goods welcome
I’d look into some form of Mini Velo … some of them have stems and seatposts that have a large range of adjustment and can easily be sized as he’s growing (+ you can ride it too !!). I took one for a whirl and was pleasantly surprised.
What does he need a bike for? If all his friends ride bmx and you get him some uber hip 20inch wheeled commuter deal, he isn’t really going to be too hyped on it.
I’m assuming the bmx he is on at the moment is a ‘kids’ bike? ‘real’ bmxs come in a huge range of sizes, and even the mid range completes have a varied range of sizes.
Bars also come in a heap of different heights, usually between 8-9inch rise, but S&M make a 10inch rise bar but I’m assuming he isn’t quite that tall.
The smallest 700C frames are ~49cm and have horrible toe overlap and headtube sizes. ISO 520 will have decent tyre selection, or go for a high performance 20" wheel, Velocity make the rims and 'bent riders have HP tyres for them.
He’s about 5’3, most of it legs, he’s not a BMX bandit & he wants to be able to sit while he pedals. Mostly JRA, to/from mates’ houses and bike path rides with me & the rest of the fam. Most of his mates have cheap-arse 24" or 26" geared MTB jobbies.
Airwalk do some of those mini-velos that look pretty sweet - they are good to deal with too, I bought a frame off their blog and the bloke is quite easy to deal with, with minimal language barrier too. All went smoothly.
But I do think they look a bit odd, and sometimes you dont want that for your kid.
There are some sweet 24" cruisers at hell on wheels in newtown.
I think I have a set of singlespeed 24’’ wheels in the garage of uncertain quality/condition., if you could find a matching frame you can have em for free.
