A New Project

Here’s a preview of my latest project.

As far as I can tell, it’s a (probably) 1968 Malvern Star Skidstar, picked up as a complete bike from a hard rubbish collection a few weeks ago.

A bit different to my other rides, but should be a bit of fun. Maybe I’ll even leave the 43/14 on there - imagine the Bitch Rd peleton when a Skidstar goes cruising past up the hills (even though we all know Bitch Rd has no hills anyway)

oh man, thats nice.

looks like you’ve got new essentials on it… rims, hubs etc. Where do you buy your parts from?

i want to be there when you take the roadies.

i’ll add it to the gallery along with your other bikes soon. propped up in bed at the moment with an annoying bug.

cheers, nick.

The wheels and cranks came straight off the Tommasini. I bought a new BB for it. The headset was cobbled together from bits, the seatpost was given to me, the seat is from my mtb and the bars and stem were sitting in the cupboard.

I built the wheels earlier this year - hubs and rims were from eBay and spokes were from Abbottsford Cycles.

If you want track gear, have a look at www.kookiebikes.com.
Matt’s a nice guy and he has some good Japanese track parts. The Suzue Pro Max hubs for ~$220 is pretty good. I got some nice Nitto bullhorns from him too. He’s in Alphington, so easy to get to.

Temporary solution or are you going to rebuild the Tommasini?

i knew there must have been someone somewhere who specialised in track parts. finally. those SIL-SP hubs at $93 might be a good starting point at attempting my own wheel build. even a 10% discount for club members…

LOVE the sushi bars and grips on the bike…Its the same combo that I run on bike (and SS MTB).

I’m just getting parts wherever I can to give it a test ride and decide if it’s worth building up properly.

I’d advice against the SIL-SP hubs. I’ve never used them but I’ve seen plenty of opinions saying they’re crap - you get what you pay for. I know the Pro Max’s are twice the price but they seem to be a MUCH better hub. Then again, for ~$84 or so I guess you can’treally complain too much.

Yeah I’ve tried them on the Tommasini once or twice but they really suck on the track. I still get the feeling I should be wearing big shiny black clown shoes with the sushis  I guess that will just get worse with the Skidstar.
