Abuse - Fighting Back?

ask erle about the potential for disaster when abusing drivers.

If you haven’t got a black belt, an uzi or a good escape route, I’d just shut it. It’s rl, not Premium Rush.

Take down their rego and report them to the EPA for littering, dob in a hoon line for driving like a tools and the cops because they will some day badly injure or even kill someone and if there’s a police record they will get done harder! The first two might even get them a fine in the mail. I hate the ciggie butt flick with a passion!!!
Do not retaliate unless you’ve got the skills for a beatdown or you’re a secret ninja or you’ve got an awesomely easy escape route.

100% truth. If you find yourself at a window going at it and you don’t think it’s going to come to blows and your point is just not getting across and feel the absolute need to have them sit and think about what they have done, put your arm in the window, pull the keys out of the ignition (they will retract naturally) and throw them on the nearest house roof.

For better effect, put keys down roadside drain. Do so in peak hour for stronger effect.

But in all seriousness, I wouldn’t do anything.

I got in a fight with some Arabs once cause they were dickheads…at the time I got burned my 99% of folks here…how times have changed…

This doesn’t work so well when the occupant of the car immediately gets out of the vehicle and spear tackles the key-grabber.
Ask user Tessssy about this one.

I’ve had a gun and a knife pulled on my by two different dicks who both swerved at me intentionally and unprovoked. Both times I told them to fuck off and things quickly escalated from there.

Pretty much exactly the best course of action.

The thing that angers me the most is even if you get a rego number the fucking pigs never do a damn thing.

I totally wouldn’t ever track down where someone lives, and spray stencil a bike lane down their driveway in the middle of the night.

Please tell me you actually did this!

Revenge as dish served cold is the shizz.

The best course of action (and I can’t believe me of all people is about to say this) is the one that lets you ride away, so that you can ride tomorrow. And the day after that. If you’re in a position to retaliate, you’re not dead so give yourself the best chance at staying that way and just get the fuck out of there.
Nasty people always get their come-uppance, whether you’re there to see it or not.

FTFY. Ethnicity aint relevant.

Helmet cam.

Over here we have a “perths worst drivers” facebook group and things tend to get passed around until the right people see it.

I still get really pissed off when people yell “Real men ride women”.

Haven’t they googled bike porn before?

I like to wave and smile at people who get agro at me, it gives them nothing to get more agro about, also if you fucked up and did the wrong then then apologise. The thing I find absolutely the most helpful though is waving and smiling at every driver who shows courtesy towards me and/or follows the road rules. I see parallels between the ‘war on terror’ and the cyclist vs car war. You don’t stop terrorism by invading people’s countries and blowing them to shit, you do it by assisting said countries with building schools, hospitals etc. on the road you’re not going to prove your point to someone who dislikes cyclists by abusing them, fighting them etc. you’ll prove your point by being courteous, reasonable and considered in your actions. Now I don’t want to sound all high and mighty about this because I often let my temper get the better of me but I always strive to behave in the manner I have described.

yeah, I think positive reinforcement (smile + wave of thanks) when a driver is nice and constructive criticism (if they take it) if they do something wrong - I did this recently with a lady at some lights after she cut me and another cyclist off and she took it quite well.

Though having said that there are always a % of idiots who it is tempting to abuse.

This is important. A friendly smile and wave in appreciation goes a long way.

I also treat every honk of a horn at me as an opportunity to smile and wave at the driver. I’ve had a couple of incidents recently where drivers have taken offence at me crossing exit ramps, despite having enough time to turn and wait for them to drive past after honking. I’m hoping that a smile and wave confuses them or makes them think they know me.

What, for transport?
