Everybody know that Brisbane is a cultural wasteland that wallows in the long shadows of its southern capital counterparts. So in order to temporarily relieve ourselves this misery I thought we should ride our bikes. This is what I’ve come up with………………
A monthly inner city fixed/ss ride. Tentatively the last Monday night of the month.
A couple of easy checkpoints with a mandatory pot of beer (or other soft beverage of choice) at each stop.
Keep it relatively short (<30kms total)
Make it as much a social event as a race.
A “Monthly Mug” presented to the “winner”. That may not always be the first person across the line.
While I do have a pretty firm idea of how it will run I’m not big on making it a huge oraganizational challenge so the idea is to keep it simple. Show up, ride, have a quick beer and a couple of laughs and be home I time for Lateline if that’s your thing. Don’t know if there is even anyone keen for this sort of thing so I figure worst case I’ll be riding to a couple of pubs by myself for the first one on the 30th July.
Doing some thinking on the deatils. Basiclly you’ll get a spoke card that you’ll need to present to a person at each checkpoint. They’ll punch your card with a custom “Two Pot Screamer” hole punch and tell you the next checkpoint. There will only be two checkpoints (hence Two Pot Screamer) and a finish point making for a short sharp ride. Sould be around 20-30 kays total. First to the finish will get to hold the monthly mug till the next one.
There will be no mandatory drinks, alcoholic or otherwise, at the checkpoints but it would be a brave man that get’s between me and the bar at the finish point.
In the immortal words of Rod Stewart - ‘Tonight’s the night’.
Brisbane Square (next to the new library) at 7PM. Drink, don’t drink, race, ride, laugh scream, smile, fixed, free. Your choice.
Checkpoints are locked in (all two of them), as is the finish. Course will be pretty easy and under 20k total. “The Mug” is ready for the first across the line.
the route we took.
it’s about 500 meters longer than it says, but it’s close.
perth karl first in a pretty quick time, brett second by about 5-10 secs, me nextt by about 10 secs, then rogain by a few minutes.
top fun, and all of you who didn’t come missed out out on a fun race and a good time.
looking forward to the next one
Cheers all.
Had a great night.
Must take my rear wheel in tomorrow and get the lockring tightened properly. Feeling the cranks let go as you are trying to slow down is not a good feeling. Feeling it spin the other way as you try to accelerate across an intersection in front of an oncoming car is even worse.
Great time nonetheless and I will be back next month.
Tony
Any chance of getting a larger copy of the 2 pot card??
I would like to get it printed off as a poster.
