BRIS - BIKE POLO, EVERY SUNDAY

sounds good, gold clubs totally slipped my mind, and here i was getting annoyed because i couldnt find any ski’ing (sp??) poles…

i think one more would be fine, at the moment, 3 on 3 would be best (imho)

I haven’t been 100% committed to this as I am pretty busy on weekends - I don’t want to say I will be there and not show.

But if 5th Oct is free for me, I will make it to the game.

Antmandan - I hang around Ugees (or Urban Grind) on Boundary St , it is known by both names. There are a few fixed riders in the area and I will let them know there is a game on. I am at Ugees pretty much all morning on Saturdays swing by if you want to catch up to organise any details or just say hi. In real life people call me Brad - everyone at Ugees knows me, just ask whoever is making the coffee.

Would love to try some polo and I think I’m free next Sunday.

And SMP/Brad, if you’re the fixie builder in West End, I think we’ve meat around Ugees. You had a look at my red/white bike.

Let’s hit some balls; I’m counting 4 players now…

I think you meet Will Jetkinoff. He has a dream to get a shop up and going. I am going to send him a message to let him know there is a game on as he was talking about playing bike polo when we were chatting the other day.

i am keeeen, but not going to be in town that sunday. hopefully kicks ass and hav another one soon

I just ordered some street hockey balls from the US. I think the normal field hockey ones I have are too big and heavy. Hope they get here by next Friday for the game.

Antmandan - what are you using for the heads on the mallets you have? It shouldn’t be too hard to get some golf clubs in shit condition to wreck for handles, just don’t know what makes the best heads.

Awesome news on the hockey balls! Sound like we’ll definitely have enough players for a game as well. At this stage I say we meet at Urban Grind on Boundary St at 3:15pm on Sunday 5 Oct, grab a coffee, then mosey over to the courts next to Musgrave Park (4pm-ish). I’m going to CMass tomorrow night so will spread the word there as well. I’ll be down at Bike Revolution on Saturday (hopefully picking up my new wheels ) so I can post up a notice there as well.

With regard to building mallets PVC pipe works well on the end. Just drill a hole through the middle and then use a couple of hose clamps and some strong glue to affix to the end of the club. I used hose clamps rather than bolts because it’s too hard to drill through the clubs I have (they’re too thin).

Someone has put up some destructions: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tink20seven/sets/72157594573372516/

I’m pretty new to the fixed thing but i’m keen as for some polo. Got a 24"mountain bike i’m going to build up fixed wiht some drops. 5ht at UG, see you all there.

OK, I didn’t realise at the time but Urban Grind closes at 3pm on Sundays :frowning:

Sooo, if anyone wants a coffee we just need to meet an hour earlier, say 2 - 2:15pm

This actually means more game time anyway.

I’ll be putting a poster up in the window in case anyone rocks up after 3pm.

Checked out the courts today, not too shabby, if anyone has a shovel they could strap to their bike to take care of a few stray weeds that’d be awesome! Otherwise we’ll just have a few interesting obstacles…

Only one week!

Those mallets are awesome. You should ride down to Suffering Parasites one weekend and get the meter maids to pose with 'em. =]

I checked out the courts on the weekend also.

There is a little bit of glass on the courts so I will go there on Saturday with a broom and do a bit of a clean-up to get it all ready.

Hey Dan - I went over to the hardware shop about 30mins after you were there and I was asking the guy about PVC for the mallets and he goes “Oh yeah, for bike polo right?”…

I had a good look on the weekend but couldn’t find any used golf clubs to cut up. I went over to Cashies and they had this rusty wooden driver from like 1922 and they wanted $50 for it - I laughed and walked out.

Balls are on a plane. Mallets are being put together. All we need is some players and all should be sweet (another friend of mine just confirmed).

There is a shitty map attached if you are a bit late or get lost.

$50 :-o. Man Crime Converters crack me up! I saw a Kmart bike once for $200, had to laugh! I made 5 mallets on Sunday, photo attached.

They look good - how did you join the club to the PVC?

I was going to paint mine orange or something - might make it easier to remember who is on whos team until we get to know one another.

awesome, looks like its full steam ahead :D:D:D

The holes are slightly too small for the golf club to fit through (known as an interference fit). This provides the majority of the `sticking’ power. I added a hose clamp to the shaft inside the mallet head to stop it slipping down. Plus a dab of plumbers cement to make it super strong.

I’ve got 2 ski poles that i’m going to make up. went to reverse garbage thismoring but couldn’t find much usefull. there was some steel pipe but that might be a bit heavy duty. I’ll keep looking cause i saw on a blog the other day (one from this thread) that the pvc shatters :? i’ll make one up wiht the steel and see how it feels. might drill it out a bit to give it that aerospace look.

Yeah I read that too - when I find something better (hard, hard, hard rubber) I will get a crap load and we will be set. I was even thinking of using wood, just like in the olden days…

What’s EOI anyway?

EOI = expressions of interest

Balls arrived today.

I am still having trouble finding some shit old clubs to cut-up. But it sounds like you guys might have these covered.

Game on.

Golf clubs have great handles but they’re a bit short. Your LHS will have 12mm aluminium tubing (1.2mm thickness so internal dia. 9.6mm) which should fit over the last few cm of your golf club. They are also quite hard – to get the (hardened) drill bit to go through I had to build a small jig around the club to hold it steady, after giving it a bit of a bake on the stove. Your milage may vary. For extra tech-wank you can drill extra holes in the aluminium tubing so you can experiment with mallet length. If you know what I mean. And I think you do. Perform your usual mallet head attachement at the end of the tubing and you’re done. Piece of urine.

Have you guys worked out how to fit a mallet to a rider? Should it be the height of the handlebars of the (polo) bike to the ground?
