I’m seeing if anyone is using\used one of these. I can’t get the top washer (The bit marked ‘A’ in the 2nd diagram) to sit even all the way around the top cup. Like in this diagram. (the gap you see with the red arrow pointing to it).
There is a “plastic adjuster” that I reckon is not sitting flush & fucked if I can get it flush (the bit in the pic that is fluted).
the bearing has to be sitting flush in the upper HS cup. The cup has to be flush on the HT (Sounds like you’ve got this one OK). If the gap between the upper HS cup and the bearing race is not even, but the bearing spins evenly all the way around, I would personally just not look at it. If it doesn’t spin evenly all the way around, return it
Before I put the top cap on it all looks as it should (even). In the destructions it says to turn the top cap over to use to push the ‘plastic adjuster’ into place. This is where is all goes pair shaped & I can’t get the ‘plastic adj’ to sit flush with the HS cup. It all spins fine though, just looks shit if you ask me.
Time to save up for a Chris King I’m thinking.
no need to save up fella. Visit www.aspire-velotech.com , he also has a large ebay store if you prefer. King hubs, headsets and everything. Great prices, he absorbs a lot of the shipping. Very friendly couple of guys too. I’ve bought a few hubsets and headsets through them. Half the price of Australian retail and you’re not supporting a rude bunch of bastards such as Trickbits Australia (it has been a few years, admittedly, since I dealt with them).
Cheers! I was oggling the Chris King Titanium on their site last night, then I went looking to see ‘how much?’ Aaaawwweee maybe just the standard one will do… http://www.aspirevelotech.com
oops I always seem to get that link wrong. Ti baseplate matched with the standard headset is lighter. Alloy cups ftw!
I have two threadless Kings and gave another away recently (ran out of 1 1/8" bicycles!), they’re awesome and never need anything maintenance wise. Which is what I value most highly after performance.
The bikes back & Brunswick Cycles couldn’t get it any better. They checked the HT facing. They put it down to the plastic adjuster too. If you ask me the chamfer on it isn’t big enough, so it doesn’t self locate anywhere near as well as it should. Looks like my 1st step into the campy camp has been a bad one. Back to the Jap & US bits for me where I’ve been happy for years. The bikes mechanically fine, and it will do for now. I just don’t think it’s a great headset the way I would expect from a Record level component.
welcome back. We’ll look after you (not that I’m Japanese or American…)

Hahaha! Cool. Once I posted this I though, “Ooo Fuck, hope I don’t start one of those Groupo Wars type thread”. If ya happy with Campy then that’s cool. There is now one less person going to by the stuff you want to buy, so it’s a win, win! Now, gota start pimpin’ my ass to get some $$ for a Chris King HS
Mate, this used to happen probably three to twelve times a week to me.
No drama, just get a peice of soft wood (if carbon steerer) and hit the steerer tube till the fork drops out. Obviously remember to have the wheel out and the front brake disconnected.
Don’t worry happens to everyone.
P.S dont worry about the bearing or cups, they built like a brick S*&thouse.
