Cleat positioning

Something that has been touched on here, but is far more important than cleat positioning, foot position.
I often suggest riders get zero float cleats to stop them from moving their feet side to side every pedal stroke, this means there is no twist in the leg/ knee which in turn can lead to massive problems.
A good pedalling technique is the most underrated skill any bike rider can have.
Been there done that with cleat positioning over many years- including reading and trying steve hoggs ideas, however I now have all my cleats dead on the ball of my feet, and set up every one else the same- BUT making sure they are not twisting their knees out when riding after a few KM
So try central over the ball and get someone to check you have a smooth and straight pedalling action.

If your legs arn’t tracking straight all the way through the stroke try raising your saddle 5mm
My fitter did this for me because I was bowing out at the bottom of the stroke ( due to a bad IT band )
Raising the saddle forces the legs to remain straight all the way through the stroke.

If you need more adjustment than you can get with normal peddles… I hate to say it
Get some speedplay zeros

what’s with the negative sentiment re speedplays?

None from me I won’t ride anything else…

A lot of peps round here don’t fancy em!

Same - just never understand why so many people are so quick to berate them.

I doubt there’s any other pedal on the market that offers more adjustability… just have to remember to take the coffee caps whenever you leave the house

Never tried them myself but there are some mutterings out there on the web that they may develop unwanted play side to side Speedplay Pedals Rock!

I want to try Keywin pedals

I personally find zero float cleats uncomfortable, but have over time managed to discipline my legs from wobbling about when pedalling, unlike some folk you see when out on the bike. A little float is handy when “adjusting” things, getting my bottle, and when out of the saddle.

A-f*cking-men. Riding long distances day upon day will soon raise any issues you have with your set-up, and give you plenty of time to hone a great technique.

Any pedal will get loose and worn out after 20000-30000 kms
Funny how people expect performance parts to last for ever.

I’ve just replaced my peddles after 2 1/2 years and there was no rocking in the peddles. My mate crashed em and destroyed one of the end caps in a small crash…

I unclip outwards…

Switching the cleats around doesn’t mean you have to unclip inwards.

etomato had the Keywin’s (they’re the locked in ones yeah?)
His have developed so much play in one of them that I think he retired them.

gypsy has some on ebay.

in terms of cleat position… i go see jason at IOS and he sets mine up. then i don’t think about them any more.

I can’t do zero float because my knees are shit and my pedal stroke is all over the place, especially when I am into it to pay the rent. Going to get a proper fit done early next year, even if I have to take a loan and go see steve hogg.

i got speedplay zero’s due to the amount of adjustable settings…ill probably go get a bike fit soon though to get the most out of them. prob wont run em on the street brakeless/86gi’s anymore without a front brake due to unclipping several times while whippin a skid. ha

orly? ok… so just harder to unclip outwards?

This is the reason for ATAC. Never ever had an unintentional unclip. Spuds were fucking dangerous while doing wicked skids in front of girls.

Dodging the flying knickers afterwards is still an issue though.

dont dodge…just take it.

Its like riding through a blizzard.
