For me the crunch with riding FG to work was getting sore knees from all the braking. When I bought the madison first I was all like ‘ho ho let’s take that rear brake off woo’ and then ‘how about you give brakeless a go’ and then after some hairy experiences I thought ‘you know what I’d like a bit of stop-stop to match my go-go’. Now I’m less of a pussycat when it comes to tailgating other cyclists and cars, and can let go on descents. It’s also interesting to feel the rear brake grabbing the wheel when I’m decelerating.
n+1 is another answer.
tired and its windy - grab gears
knees are sore - SS
feeling fine - fixed
I probably grab a different bike one day a week. I find that commuting is more damaging to the bike/tires etc than just cruising or going for a roadie so I am more likely to grab the bombproof fixie or the cross bike
depending on fitness and hills… I’d say prly a bit closer to 40 (15ks… 30 min commute would be a constant 30kph… maybe ok for a one-off or a social ride, but on your own, carrying bags for a commute… probably would leave 40mins)
just out of curiosity, why would you not buy a road bike? on the days you’re feeling in the mood to coast, jump on that, and when youre in the mood for fun, ride your fixed gear. Ive considered free, but i think id just go a roady.
con is, among a few others that have been covered, some real wankers begin to identify with you. some great people too, but more and more, they’re mostly wankers.
