Could these be the brakes that will tempt Nikcee to try a non canti?

i can’t find the quote now, but you mentioned about not slicing yourself on discs a while back.

aside from having someone weld the mounts on existing forks, is there anyone that does a RHS front fork and caliper? a LHS front disc could be troublesome to knees/legs when not on the bike (during pickup/carrying). at least, to me who always ends up bumping my front wheel and forks a couple of times per race.
a RHS disc could cause a problem for others when in close proximity (normally when approacing the first barrier as a huge pack when bikes and people are flailing everywhere)

rear disc i couldn’t care less about, as it’s fairly well shielded by the frame, and it won’t be anywhere near soft flesh. i also don’t see the need for massive rear stopping power.

i could start learing to dis/re-mount from the right, but i can see that taking way too long, and my new bike’s cables run along the right side of the top tube, so more things to get in my way.

thoughts?

The problem I have with the current disc options is they seem overkill for CX, and therefore heavy.
But I can totally see Shimano coming out with an integrated hydro STI in the near future with perhaps tiny diameter rotors which would solve the problem.

Adding a disc mount to a non disc specific fork is asking for a folded fork and a set of dentures. Rather than moving it to the DS, I’d rather move it to the front of the fork, that way you remove any wheel ejection issues.

Dismounting on the drive side has more issues than cabling, you’ll have your drivetrain in contact with your body, apart from the muck on you, you’ll likely drop a chain at some point doing that.

Works for me but I’m a lefty so I’m used to doing things the wrong way.

I remember Andy tc/fyxo mentioning on his website that Dan suggested (IHO) that mechanical discs were overkill for a cx bike.
*Are there different types of discs? Stupid question maybe…

YES! Cotic from the UK does their 700C “Roadhog” fork with the IS disc mount on the RHS. I have one on my RoadRat.

steel only and they’re not light…I think they sell 'em separately

thanks v much CC, my 5 min search didn’t bring up COTIC.

filed away in the Bike Research Folder.

That pretty much paraphrases Dan’s opinion (which echoes mine and some guy called Niels Albert amongst others), but it’s definitely a point of contention amongst both the Cx and CX-obsever community. I don’t doubt the superior stopping power of dicscs, but I’m not sold on the need for them, nor the trade-offs you need to make for it. But that’s my opinion…

The new cantis from Avid and FSA (amongst others) seem to take advantage of modern technologies and further thinking on improving canti braking/functioning. Euro-X’s are still highly prevalent in the Elite races so they must work to a reasonable degree.

It will be interesting to see how many Shimano sponsored riders use their new brakes this year.

Mechanical (cable pull) and hydraulic (got some brake fluid in thar).
Also, yeah, probably the Apollo

Hey, that’s a review of a Jamis!
