Crank spider arms moved??

I’ve got this arabesque crankset that I pulled apart today to clean up a bit. It had 52/40T chainrings on it. Took them off, sprayed it with some Easy Off, wiped, steel wooled etc. Then I’ve gone to put the 40T back on the inner ring part, and it doesnt fit aymore?!?!

It will fit on the outer part fine, just not on the inner. As if the arms have flexed outwards in the 15mins or so. To check it wasnt the ring i tried with the 52T and same thing. I even tried putting the crank in the fridge for a few hours and leaving the ring out, but no luck.

Obviously I dont wanna be filing the cranks back and risk offsetting the rotation circle or anything.

Anyone???

Cheers

Ah yeah heres a pic

That sounds really wierd is the orientation the same.

I reckon it’s just a tight fit. Put the bolts on loosely and gradually tighten them up and it should spring into place.

Yeah I know, I tried it every orientation. It ends up you have 3 consecutive ones on fine, then the other 2 are about a mil too short.

I hope so but it doesnt look like it will be that simple. will try tomorrow.

haha trust me it was tempting. the hammer and mallet were just sitting right there on the bench next to the cranks. couldnt stop staring but the ghost of the old suntours I once had on a peugeot roadie kept screaming noooooo not again

Was it difficult to get off initially?

Use a rubber mallet and you’ll be fine. I get this problem with a particular chainring on a Dura Ace crank.

And remember, if you take it to a bike shop they’ll do the same thing anyway. It’s just that you won’t see them do it

ok just put both chainrings on and tightened the bolts. worked! no satisfying snap or pop as the 40t went on though and to the naked eye I dont think its sitting parallel to the outer. oh well, close enough i guess

thanks dudes

the spider has definitely moved, i would recommend changing the crank fluid.
