Wouldn’t it be problematic welding a steel cog to an aluminum hub?
Nail polish works quite well.
Thankfully my housemate hasn’t worked out where hers disappears to
Got no idea… that’s why I asked the stupid question. I’ve got a mate who’s a welder by trade, I’ll ask him when next I see him.
They should have it at the hardware stores tradies use. A stupid question maybe… but couldn’t you just get it welded on? (If you know someone with gear, I mean.)
It is generally impossible to weld steel to aluminium (at least with anything you’re likly to get access to/ be able to afford to have done)
Forget welding! And any of the loctite options will have a limit to the strength - it will be a mess if you find out the hard way! Remember that the term “suicide” has been applied to rotafixed/converted road hubs for a reason!
If you use red loctite be aware that it has to be heated - 2/300 deg?? - if you ever want to break it to disassemble.
I have run rotafixed, no loctite or BB ring for a couple of years, wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it, but always with a brake!
Ask a stupid question, get a sensible answer… you guys are no fun
Did the loctite> rotafix> lockring last Tuesday night. I haven’t had a chance to ride til Sunday (band stuff). Seemed to work fine. I was skidding like a mad man and nothing happened.
Hopefully it stays good
JUST GET A FUCKIN TRACK HUB.
So, This is probably stupid… But has anyone thought about brazzing the cog on the hub?
It would become a permanent fixie then… no more worries?
Dredging up an old thread. Welcome to fixed.org. Use the search function, go to sheldon brown, use google.
Careful Jono, posts like this are what get you moderator powers.
Duly noted.

Yes it’s stupid.
Welcome to fixed!
i just bought a new hillman frame that is on its way from perth.
EDIT: it has the lockring spot welded to the cog. not sure if the cog is spot welded to the hub. not sure if this is the same thing but it sounds pretty stupid anyway. they’re mavic rims laced to campy hubs so hoping they’re not totally fucked. they’ve been tied and soldered too!!
lucky i bought it just for the frame!
fancy selling the wheels?
thats kinda what im looking for
not the retarded spot weld though
hmmm, maybe. i wanna see what they’re like first. waiting for gene genie to post them over from perth so i can have a good look and decide if they’re worth holding onto. blakey mentioned they’re a track wheelset so might not be ideal if you’re looking for a set of wheels for the street?
*correct me if i’m wrong blakey.
i’ll give you a shout if i do decide to sell them (and i get hold of them, whenever that is, not sure when gene’s posting them!!)
if its a track hub then the cog+locking ring will never come off because they are opposing threads. if you really wanted to use them for track just get a new hub.

If they’re tack welded, just grind the welds out, hey presto.
fair enough
and thats what i figured about the tack weld.
its a bit of a stupid idea welding them together
wouldnt loctite be better/ work the same way?
