Fugly but fast

All the naysayers seem to forget you can pedal going downhill too with a longer gear. There’s no freewheel on this thing and I do enjoy the buzz of overtaking as much traffic as possible with a bit of gravity power on my side.

Helps me remember where to leave the glue off.

We’re not naysayers- we’re realists!

Actually, maybe this is the start of an even more ridiculous cycling trend- brakeless fixed wheel bikes, with massive gears. Imagine… ‘rolling down the hill at top speed, I feel at one with the bike, it’s kinda zen maaaan!’

Any hero can mash a big gear. Spinners are winners.

Ah you beat me to it Horatio!

in other cities ive ridden this trend is already very rampant. unfortunately it takes more of the form of a macho contest… aka ‘i cant believe you are only riding 76"’ not surprisingly it seems to only happen amongst males.

if you talk to the old guys who have been riding fixed for a long while (and i mean a while) they all pretty much laugh at gears above 71" or so on the street. there is allowances for height and body size… bigger peoples can push a bigger gear more easily simply based on leverage and muscle mass. i have known a lot of guys who rode mid-to-high seventies (and above) for gear inches, and all but one ended up downsizing for better control, comfort and endurance.

especially when you are in your first few years… good technique will get you further, faster and easier.

its like ‘would you rather lift 4x your body weight 3 times, or your body weight 20 times’ riding on the street is closer to the latter, track racing is the former. you are out there for longer hauls.

yes you can ride a big gear… anyone pretty much can. you turn the pedals… but can you do it well? ie not pushing squares, using all of your legs, etc? its the little things like that that make your riding better.

i do understand that you feel spinny even on downhills, it feels safer on a big gear as your legs dont go as quick. but what you end up having to do to stay on top of your riding in traffic is often where you lose out.

im not trying to lecture you… just suggesting that if you are into this you should consider gearing down (maybe into the high 70s?) itll feel weird at first, but i think you will end up being happier. but maybe not…

hehe, maybe Der Kaiser has relocated to Melbourne?

Is that “The Flight Of The Valkyries” I hear?

haha I thought you’d say that!

thats a gaymeisters bike, lay off the roids and listen to some Reggae  you’ll get there twice as quick…

If you see this let me know. It’s been half-inched. Mother fucking thieves.

Where was it stolen from?
More details would help.

I’ll be on the lookout for anyone with boltcutters and blown out knees.
