back on topic, don’t forget the differences between track and road drops.
i switched from track drops to some old road drops for my commuter/everything bike, and with cork bar tape all over them they’re pretty much perfect. don’t need hoods, there’s just enough space on the top corners to go without them, ie: 3 different positions. 39cm is nice for squeezing past buses too.
i was tempted by track drops for a while based on looks only, which is pretty stupid. They’re not a great choice for navigating through traffic since the curves at the top leave very little space for your hands - the hipster look with your hands against the stem is fine until you have to suddenly dodge a wayward taxi, then you’ll want a bit more leverage. meanwhile, the deep drop of track drops means that if you do use the lower part, out on the highway or whatever, your head is down so low you can’t see much around you. fine on the track but no good for dodging those taxis.
yet another reason for leaving the track bike parts at the track.
I have track drops on two of my bikes, Nitto B123AA’s on the Samson and Cinelli Pista’s on my Malvern Star (now).
I find that I ride majority of the time with either my hands next to the stem, or with my hands pointing forward (see pic of Chipper) on the part that goes down towards the drops, about where the hoods would be (if they were on there). I only really go down in the drops when there’s a head wind or I’m really sprinting.
I find when I’m track standing, skidding, sprinting, going through heavy traffic etc I have my hands pointing forward.
I have never ridden with road drops, so I don’t know what I’m missing, but I have no problems with my track drops.
yes, the angle of the drops are different, road drops are more boxie then track drops, they are ment to have hoods on them so the are flatter and usually wider.
Wow, I’m pretty surprised someone remembers that band. I’ve got a couple of copies of that album in the carboard outer sleeve with extra goodies inside. It was limited to 100 copies. PM me if you want one cheap.
ive got cinelli pista bars with old shimano (i know shame, i have scratched all the names off, no for the shimano factor but for the cleaner alu look) and i mainly sit in the drops as its easier to grab the brakes from underneath.
