So this is my Hillman I picked up for a steal off WA gumtree. Came with Shimano 600 group, Campy wheelset SE drillium stem and Cinelli Bars. However after riding it like that I decided that friction DT shifters are not for me and I am going something a little more modern.
The frame is a confirmed Hillman. Built by Gordon Hill in 1985 with Reynolds 531 with campy fork tips/dropouts.
I will be slowly restoring this ie, strip, repaint, new decals, new modern group, new cockpit/touch points.
This build will be done on a Budget because it’s a bit of fun. If I want a roadie to climb big hills/smash km’s I’ll go buy something carbon.
I have. Mavic Aksium wheelset to go on and that’s about it. Leaning towards Shimano Tiagra for the group because of price. If some extra money can go into the project then I will go Campag Veloce.
In the near future I will be looking for: New headset, Nitto Pearl 8 Alu, new bars, something 39-40cm wide, Fizik Tundra (I prefer to the Arione), seatpin/qr skewers and. Few other small bits.
I will update this thread as I progress with it. Hope to get it paint stripped next weekend.
Personally I’d leave the chipped paint, looks boss and with new components you would have an awesome looking roadie reminiscent of those classic cars with modern running gear that were in that car thread
I would love to leave it, however thats the good side… There are some gnarly chips/rust on the other side, and where I’ve removed reflector commuter tape has peeled off large strips of colour unfortunately
In terms of coin for painting, I already have everything I need to paint bar the base colour, so it will cost me under $20 to give it a lick.
The new scheme will be an ‘homage’ with the same style decal getting made. I will be drawing them up in illustrator to get printed / cut through another member here (haven’t asked him yet ha) so if anyone wants some decals hit me!
I’ll give it a clean/buff/polish and re-evaluate, but after its built I don’t want to have to strip it back to deal with some rust under the paint after its done!
It’s not my first rodeo when it comes to repainting frames so it won’t be a hack job by any stretch. And at most I’d be saving $50 (colour/decals) and I love old shit with new components, but it is a nice frame and I want it to look that way too. My Pursuit looks nice in photos but looks like a beater in real life. I don’t want this to echo the same vibe because, let’s face it, it’s the nicest frame I own!
The veloce group is a better buy than the 105. Twice the warranty, better resale, looks better
And can you given any reason he needs a triple for… If he’s that old why not get motor for the dam thing
jesus fuck, i just did a 3 second search and found that example of a 105 group at a cheap price. yeah i know he probs don’t want a triple. i wasnt threatening him with death if he didnt buy it immediately…
haha i was only making the most of the opportunity to take a cheap shot sorry bro you know how it goes round here…
and HLC i think campag have stopped making small parts available for all their shifters, but you can get the internal mech as a one piece uint along with the levers… but… they cost of the replacement shifters is quite low… plus you can take another 20% off for the vat too… so whole new pair of shifters $80
if the dam things breaks that is Campagnolo Veloce Black Ergopower Levers 2011
the 105 shifters are more like $140 a pair… minus the vat of course
lock ring tool, maybe $10 from wiggle, don’t get a parks lockring tool i had a parks ‘campag’ tool that lasted one use before the shit soft thing was too fucked to use again. and i can post a how too set campag chain pins thread with a $20 chain tool if ya’ll need and there is also a cheap replacement 5.5mm pin you can get from ebay that needs no fancy tool.
and the new low end cranks use a bearing puller kinda thing that looks like a standard puller… this is the special part… Campagnolo UT-FC095 Power Torque Crank Protector
