Judge finds fault with fixies

Ginsberg (to Officer Barnum):

?When you approached the rider did she stop??

Officer Barnum:

?Yes.?

Ginsberg:

?How?d she stop the bike??

Officer Barnum:

?I don?t know.?

it seems a bit messed up.

i reckon if anyone gets pulled over they should just say they’ve got a coaster brake.

…in a very small hub

Officer Barnum:

?But the gear is not a brake.?

Exactly. Pay the fine you whiney bitch. Who gives a fuck, its America.

Same again.

How’d she stop the bike?

I don’t know.

Priceless.

I was pulled over once for riding quote “too aggressively”. When the officer pulled me over she asked what I was doing.

reply: riding to work!

officer: we pulled you over because we felt you where riding too aggressively and not keeping to the left side of the road.

reply: Well officer as evidenced in front of you this bike has 23mm tyres, this means that at full pressure the actual contact with the road is significantly less. So if your in my position with tram tracks on the road, parked vehicles in clearway zones and no where else to ride, when you change lanes you make damn sure you do it aggressively to ensure you remain up right (flex back to correct upright posture to show them).

Officer: (removes sunglasses from face) where are your brakes son?

Reply: Well honey, this here is a fixed bike so the brake is built into the drive train. Will there be anything else?

Officer: next time we see you riding that aggressively…

Reply: ride off with headphones pumping mid conversation.

Moral of the story?

Not sure really, just don?t even bother coppers!

so what’s a ‘penalty unit’??

$52 i think.

Or having your mail delivered by Spuddy for the next month

If your client had a stick she could rub against her tire, you’d have a case

Maybe that stick down the head-tube brake idea isn’t so crazy after all.

Have stick - Will brake

I think roguedubb is refering more to a “panic button”.

Hit the panic button on the stem cap which will push a rod down the steerer tube and engage a brake pad to the tyre.

A “hidden” brake if you will …

This story is getting popular.
Wonder if the Aussie Cops will catch on??

Im a lawyer  so know this sort of thing for work.

Last two fines I got (riding on footpath, no helmet) are both $52, and one penalty unit.

OK I just checked - a penalty unit is currently running at $107. Until a couple of years ago the value was fixed at 100 and then 110. In the last couple of years the government has indexed fines etc and so the value of a penalty unit is periodically declared. The fine for no helmet and riding on the footpath is 0.5 of a penalty unit. One penalty unit when you were fined was about $104.

The on the spot fine can presumably be levied at 0.5 the value of the penalty unit.
