how much is it to rent a bike?
Cos I’m heaps down for that “bikeshare messy pub cruise/alleycat/skidcomp/chicken”
^ I’m down. I was intending to organise something, but kinda waiting for the weather to warm up a bit. I have no concern if someone wants to take the lead on this one.
Brisbane is about to introduce a similar scheme with similar problems. It’s not that I don’t want it to work, I just don’t think it will, mainly because of the helmet issue.

Bike rental with no available helmet rental, but compulsory helmet laws? Who ever thought that would be effective? Stupid fucking idiots. I hope it fails.
Didn’t get anything.
I just saw on channel 10 a ‘protest’ regarding the hire bike/helmet law contradiction: Cyclists fined during anti-helmet protest - ABC Melbourne - Australian Broadcasting Corporation

i blame Cadel for making people think about bikes
I just saw this as well. Is it just me, or does he not understand this will result in more people dying on our roads?
Plus this plan was destined to fail, because of the lack of a helmet hire system. But relaxing the helmet laws? Really? Bit far Mike Rubbo. Why not just organise a protest to get a helmet hire system instead.
urgh, stoopid work computer wigged out on me. sent again
I’m smelling the brewings of something AWESOME
Yep, fatally flawed without any provision for helmet. I love the idea of being able to grab a bike when i’m in town and don’t have my own, but no helmet = fail.
Totally down for a bike share pub cruise. count me in. they’re heavy beasts apparently.
Have you got any data to back this statement up?
very heavy, i haven’t ridden one but picked one up, i’d say around 18-20kg. felt like the frame had been filled with concrete.
but yes, been thinking that a bikeshare alleycat would be pretty awesome.
can you imagine the govt when they assessed the figures: “why on this particualr day did 100 bikes get hired? and why did so many come back with vomit on them?”
The protesters are now walking their bikes to avoid further fines. hehe
They are very heavy, but are surprisingly easy to ride. I wouldn’t want to ride one around all day, but as a quicker alternative than walking, I’d rent one regularly if there wasn’t helmet issues involved.
^ Maybe Lane should use one?
Bike Hire update!
You can now buy AS/NZS2063 approved helmets from 7-11s nearby the bike stations for $5, with a $3 refund if you return it afterwards. The helmet is a $12 K-Mart jobbie, with a nice ratchet at the back instead of just the chin strap. 3 colours and 3 sizes available.
I walked into the 7-11 on Swanston / Flinders Lane and they had to go and get them from out the back for me, then had trouble scanning them as they weren’t in the system yet. Now there’s a bunch stuffed in with the magazines.
