If it takes longer than six months then buy a roadie. The amount of confusing shit that you try and learn will make you think fixed gears are easy.
yeah the hub is fucked. rotafixed the cog, tightened the lock ring as tight as tight can be, cog still rolls back and forth on hub. i was jjust hestent about the hub being the problem because it wasnt slidding just jolting on powerful pedal stroke, but the hub is stripped. so new wheel set here i come. lesson learnt kids; dont buy cheap wheelsets, if its under 150, its too good to be true haha.

Mostly true - with the exception of the formula hub/alex g6000 combos on ebay, which routinely go for about 80-100 inc. delivery. They’re tough as nails and decent hubs to boot.
Yep I’ve been rocking one of these wheelsets to and from work for months now without a hitch. Spend your money on cogs and lockrings people!!!
^ yes same
mine survived getting run over, so yeah, pretty fkn tough
Hmm I foudn them on ebay, but they dont come in silver… haha. Any other brands?
Buy a black or white set, a can of oven cleaner, a massive bucket and get caustic on that anodizing. Poslish up with a nylon brush and you have silver rims.
Just don’t breathe too much. Preferably do this outside.
Well i found a velocity deep v wheelset, silver, on ebay from the US for 270…comes with formula hubs. should i go for it? im so undecided. haha.
this shit is like someone who joins a drag racing forum, and starts bitching about how the parts on their datsun keep breaking and letting them down.
stop being so cheap, save for one more week and buy a decent wheelset.
then we will never have to go through all of this again.

Drozzy, thanks for the tip – I’ll use a set in my next build.

P.m., I’d agree with you if it wasn’t possible to buy a cheap (inexpensive), rugged wheelset. If drozzy, antmandam & ellepea are right, then the ebay formula/alex wheelsets are the goods.
Your juxtaposition of a ‘drag racing forum’ (extremely high performance, and custom/high quality engineering?) and a ‘datsun’ (old bomb?) suggest that you think this forum should only be about high quality well engineered bikes. Doesn’t that seem a bit elitist? Personally, I think ghetto fixed gear bikes are every bit as interesting as (and generally have more character than) any of the latest new FG bikes.
PS - Hey, I just got to use the word ‘juxtaposition’ on this forum. I wonder what’s that worth if falls on a triple word score tile?
He might be referring to those olschool datsuns with a 20b conversion doing at second quarter miles HA
Rotors = money pits.
Or I could have missed the point altogether.
/off topic
what he’s suggesting is don’t buy the cheapest stuff out there and then complain about it breaking. ie, if you wanted a car to last you don’t buy a datsun. you don’t need to get a Peugeot, but at least get a magna that’s less than 10 years old.
∆ don’t buy a stars wheelset. you don’t need phils laced to campy rims, but at least get formulas laced to deep v’s.
and unless he has another bike i don’t know about, the p.m doesn’t ride an elitist FGB
shieeeeet!
I don’t know about you El Kabong, but whenever I commute in the morning, go for long rides with mates or even just go down to the shops, I don’t want to have to worry about any part on my bike failing me.
Holy shit, what a revelation, parts that work, cost more money!
All I was trying to say was if everybody took a realistic approach to building up a bike, we would never have these boring new threads everyday with people complaining that their star wheelset just buckled in the wind.
I have had the same parts for two years, so yea i’m well elite
p.m., point taken.
FFS - Stop hating on the Datsuns. Before the Japanese started making cars other manufacturers were being way too lazy.
^^ money pit right there, but so awesome.
