If only you’d asked a year ago. Via our friends at BV. Apparently you have to be 18 to supervise someone under 12 on the footpath, so no dragging along a friend who’s under 12. That sucks :\
People aged under 12 years of age are permitted to ride their bicycles on the footpath.
Under the road rules, people aged under 12 years of age are permitted to ride their bicycles on the footpath, unless specifically prohibited.
People aged 12 years of age or older are not permitted to ride their bicycles on the footpath, unless they:
[ul]
[li]are aged over 18 years of age and are accompanying a child who is under 12 years of age and the child is under the rider’s supervision
[/li][li]have a medical or an intellectual disability and have a certificate signed by a medical practitioner that states that it is undesirable, impractical or inexpedient for them to ride on the road
[/li][li]are engaged in the delivery of postal articles for or on behalf of Australia Post.
[/li][/ul]
Please note that the rules do not make it legal to ride on the footpath with a child in a seat or trailer.
Get a job with Auspost!? or a letter from your GP Or lie and say you’re 11 and 11 months.
you can use one of the club bikes - they just got a whole new set of hillbricks in a broad variety of sizes. the clinic is on every sunday morning. check out the brunswick cycling club website for more info, then start nagging your mum.
Oh, I see. I’ve done other sports and usually their is an enrollment day and if you miss it you can’t do it and so forth. Must be my lack of care or shit mood at the moment.
i was going to suggest the track also. brendan’s suggestion is a good one.
i was gonna say you should see if there’s someone that can take you out to harrison street velodrome one night and have a few laps. might be a good way to get rid of some energy, and not too far from north melbourne…
I’m looking at doing the Sunday Junior Clinic. I’ve PM’ed a few people too get info one of them being Blakey because the Junior Clinic has a link to a flickr album of the Kids Clinic which is under his account. He may or may not know anything about it but anyway. I might just turn up next sunday and see what they say. Thanks for your help.
Mr Genius, if you are 12 years old, I must congratulate you on your literacy skillz; spelling, punctuation and grammar are exceptional. You have given me hope for the future.
awesome thread! i disappeared for whole days at the bmx trails when i was 10-13yo. (bellarine peninsular) and would also take day trips to melbourne city. No footpaths (or brakes) for me though Maybe try to open her eyes to how safe it is riding thorough peak hour traffic, lane splitting, tram tracks, taxis and peds… wait… maybe don’t do that. give it tiiimmmeee!
Don’t do it! You want to be able to actually make money when you are older don’t you?
Anyway, as in the original post, where do you live?(EDIT: I take it it’s actually in Nth Melb? Almost in the city anyway)If you want to ride into the city and live far out, it may be a pretty hairy experience for your mum.
Also, don’t show her the Mash vid, or various others and tell her that is why you like tarck bikes. You will never be allowed to leave the house.
I know riding with your parents is a bit stifling, but…unless your dad has some sort of health/medical condition tell him to get his butt out and in the saddle and take you for some rides.I’m just getting my 11 yr old son used to local streets and teaching him some roadcraft now.I can’t wait until he’s capable of riding longer distances with me in the future.
Dad doesn’t really like cycling… As for Mum, she’s got a beautiful GT Tachyon but hasn’t used it in a month. I look forward to riding to school but thats about it.
I try to get my dad into cycling, and that old malvern star I got for him was an ambitious start, But I’d have been better off getting him a ss road bike with bmx pedals.
Also, my 15yo brother comes out on rides now, which is sweet, except when we go to the pub and my friends try and give him beer.
It’s actually the white 2010 model. But It looks really good. I asked her if I could try to get more fit before I start the Brunswick Track Cycling Junior Clinic and come on runs with her. She said yes and also added that she might try to use her bike more this season (In place of running, blarghhh). Anyway, I 'spose thats a good thing that she’s gonna get on a bike more but a bad thing that she doesn’t see how it can be used to get to places faster and as an alternative to walking, if you get where I’m going…
PS. Thats cool about the PM thingy.
