Having cantilevered dropouts also meant the rear triangle was shorter and gave maximum stiffness which was also a benefit to Cannondales. Also I’m pretty certain it’s the ground aluminum welds that made them so beautiful in the first place. If you want daggy welds go buy a Visp.
In 2002, Cannondale broadened their model line to include ATV and off road models to go with the MX400. The ATV’s in particular were extremely well received, but the stigma of poor reliability never completely left the brand. Cannondale eventually upgraded the motor’s power, but the writing was already on the wall. The red ink eventually got the better of the cycling giant and in 2003 Cannondale Motorcycles filed for bankruptcy protection, eventually selling off the motorcycle division. Thus ended the great American motocross experiment, a sad case of what might have been. In the end, it became a victim of its own overreaching ambition.
