Dunno about the tyre pressure. Larger tyres at lower pressure than I used to run. ~33 & 34.5mm wam f +r at ~50-55psi each end. Currently 80kg. I ride some very B grade roads for less traffic.

Possibly could go a bit less. May try it. I am slow now anyway so speed is less of an interest than it was.

Yeah I’ve slowly needed to embrace the slowness since fighting it is futule and frustrating over a certain age. For me that means no computer or timing my rides, and considering just getting out the door for a ride being the achievement. Especially this time of year.

This R&H tyre pressure calculator below says 29 psi for me on a rough road with a measured 47mm tyre. But I run about 25 psi or less because it’s more insurance against hitting stuff I miss, like sticks that fall from the overhanging trees where I ride. Plus generally I’ve heard that lower pressures also mean lower numbers of flats. I haven’t had a flat for years, that I can remember anyway.

Tubeless has basically negated flats for me also.

I am running am at, or slightly under, the Sram tyre pressure calculator. Comfort is good, which is more important to me.

I still measure everything. Even have power meter pedals on the 2 bikes I commonly ride. I am aware it is all in decline and have accepted it, but still enjoy monitoring it. I am probably a bit weird but thats me. :person_shrugging:

Cleaned it. First time in a long time. Back into storage it goes tomorrow.

Also cleaned this and reset the front DiaCompe cantis. Probably take this at the retro day at Heffron and put it up for sale.

Made an interesting “discovery” today.

A few years ago I acquired a second hand Bontrager Race (Road) wheelset. It came without a cassette so i cannot remember if it came from the 10 speed or 11 speed era.

But very nice rim brake wheels, low spoke count, nice dark “brushed matte” finish, wide profile to optimally suit 700x 28/30/32 tyres. Etc.

Ended up doing quite a lot of miles with the front wheel, but not much with the back wheel, because this (modern) wheel hub is a bit too “wide” for my favourite road bike which is a retro steel frame from the 7/8 speed cassette era.

While fiddling around in the shed today, something caught my eye. It looked like a hairline crack in the rim, extending from a drive side spoke eyelet.

Initially I thought it was a figment of my imagination, maybe a scratch !

But then my gaze fell on another eyelet, and I saw a much bigger crack around it.
Surprised would be an understatement.

I had assumed that these wheels were close to cutting-edge for aluminium rim brake technology.

Instead, I am reminded of that longstanding tech truism - lightweight, strength, affordability - choose any two is the best that you can do !

Chinese wheelset manufacturers have changed the price set now and made that “truism” less accurate now.

Zen carbon, XMCS, Elite, to name a few.

Some very light wheelsets that meet those 3 categories in CF imo.

Apologies if this is a bit of a clunky post (I’m still working out how to use this forum).

It looks like the “cracks” in the rear wheel rim was sometimes reported with these wheels, from the 2010 - 2014 era :

From a technical perspective, presumably the strength of the spoke pull on the drive side is very very high (because there are only 12 spokes on each side of the wheel).

Which has some advantages of course, BUT the tradeoff is that higher spoke tension needs to be matched with a stronger rim-eyelet interface.

Presumably the fudge factor in the rim material strength specification was not high enough :grimacing:

Or maybe it was planned obsolescence, since they have computer modelling these days to determine how many cycles the material structure will last under that load. “Light, strong, cheap. Pick two.” Bontrager coined the term, but in this case the original purchaser ended up only picking one.

These days I’d be content with functional, durable, and cheap. It’s probably what the Giant started with when selling in AU in the early '90s. Now they’ve largely become like the big names they used to undercut. I’d expect the Chinese to travel a simlar path, although probably faster this time.

I expect the same path to be travelled. You are correct imo. Great whilst it lasts but it wont last. They are there to make profit, not provide a service. :frowning:

I have 3 wheelsets from far sports/wheelsfar and single wheel from zen. All seem very well made. I noticed zipp are trying to sell one their new wheelsets that are heavier than Chinese offerings for ~$1000 more. Their prices seemed to have adjusted down. Maybe they have got the hint. Close but no cigar.

I updated the firmware on my favero pedals today. For the first time it worked first shot. Every other time it’s taken 2-3 goes per pedal

Edit: one is my farsports wheelsets is up to 18,922kms. Make of that what you will

I have a set of Light Bicycle WR50 that live on the Reacto. It has 22.8k km on it and they have done ks on the Reacto also. Very happy with them.

I have Zipp 404 firecrest on the old Cervelo S5. Had to get a hub replaced on the rear after it broke where the spokes mount. Will never buy another set. Expensive and P weak is my experience of them.

Bled the rear brake on the Reacto today. Never been good since I put the Kocevlo bars on. Coming back almost to the bar now.

This time I put the bike up on the service stand with the bars high and the rear brake unmounted and hanging down below the chain stay. Put the funnel up on the lever and filled the syringe with brake oil. Put it on the bleed port of the rear brake. Pulled back to eliminate bubbles and pulled a bit of air out of the caliper. Then pushed the fluid on the bleed port until the funnel on the lever filled. Closed the bleed screw and disconnected the empty syringe. Sucked the fluid out of the funnel with the syringe and putvthe full syringe back on the bleed port, before pushing it into the funnel again. Did that 3 or 4 times and the brake is now great. :ok_hand:

OT: swapped the Token carbon wheels on the good Gazelle for some silver Open Pro to Ultegra 6700. Looks good. Photos when I ride it next.

I suppose it can be if the crowd is followed. While I’m not a technophobe. The only electronics my bikes have are lights. I’m a telco tech, so I work with electronics and software often. Because I know it becomes another thing to go wrong, I avoid it. So people can have their Di2/AXS, power meter pedals, GPS computers, radar lights, ABS (yes it’s coming), electronically adjustable suspension, electronically operated dropper posts, and all the other fun complexities. While I try and keep it as simple as I can tolerate.

Related. I recently had a problem with a hydro rear disc caliper, so I swapped the whole lot out for cable disc. Problem solved.

I probably qualify as a technophobe. :laughing:

None of my bicycles have power meter pedals, or power meters of any sort !
I have a new-fangled modern bike with hydraulic disc brakes but I’m not convinced that I like disc brakes.

But that’s probably sour grapes on my part because it’s the only bike that I have ever crashed on AND significantly injured myself :thinking:

Also bike computers - yeah nah, not yet. I just use my phone for pics, Strava, etc.

My riding buddy loves his Wahoo thingo.

We did an event the other day. About 50 km on rural roads, some gravel, with quite a few turns.

He used his Wahoo to navigate the route.

I just looked at a map the night before and worked it out and that was that.
And I didn’t take any wrong turns.

In fact at one stage I had to yell out to another rider in front of me when she took a wrong turn.

Yes, I had been on the course once before, but that was a few years ago.
And I do appreciate that sometimes navigation- particularly in cities- is so damn complicated that the use of electronic assistant is a no brainer.

Don’t ask me how I know this ! :rofl:

But I reckon that one day I will get electronic gear shifting for my bike.

As long as no one criticises me when I put it on an old bike !

it’s my hobby. i’m lucky enough to be able to ride to and from work. having something that is low maintenance is definitely an advantage

Jason put me onto some Garmin vector3 pedals I got cheap a few years ago. Love using them and even if my sustainable power is in decline, I still enjoy measuring it and watching it. HR is slowly doing the same but I monitor that too. It used to be a pacing strategy along with lactate feeling in the legs when racing TTs. Power is definitely more suited to structured training and racing but some of us still like it.

With respect to mapping I use it on new routes. Have plotted a few gravel routes out on strava and lobbed them on the Garmin. When you are out on the dirt with no familiar landmarks and no signs, it is very handy to have a plotted route to follow. :wink:

Interested why you don’t appreciate disc brakes? Yes more maintenance and complexity than cable operated rim calipers, but in the grand scheme of things not that complex at all. Cars have run them a long, long time. Effective, predictable braking regardless of the weather or location makes them far better than rim brakes imo. Applicable to aluminium rims but amplified when you prefer CF wheels as I do.
