It’s definitely a worry when you can get stuff online for cheaper than w/s, and have it arrive in less than a week while it takes the same amount of time and money for something to travel from Melbourne to Hobart.
I love having roadie friends… got a decent secondhand Ultra Gatorskin last night for nothing. New skid tyre, here I come!
+1… its up there with befriending the ‘popular’ roadie store. if you spend >5G on your bike, you cant possibly ride tyres with a cut or two in them, or the customer will insist new tyres with each service. 
i use superglue to fix the cuts (if they even warrant it - add glue with the tyre inflated, deflate to seal/glue) and away you go!
Yeah I managed to get a gatorskin off my LBS, only 10-20% used the other day. I generally just hit them up the night before bin night and do some dumpster diving!
