Why does rear cog have a longer side?

Hey Guys,

This might seem like a really amateur question, however, I need to know. On one side of my no name cog i got stock with my AT450 Alexis Rims, it has a ‘lip’ (see pics) and on the other side, it’s flush. Why is this and which way is it meant to be mounted onto the hubs thread? does it really matter or is there a proper way to do it.

lip faces hub… smoove side faces out. then the lockring snuggles up to it to keep it snug…

As too why, dunno - maybe just so it has more thread? i dunno…

flange side towards the wheel hub mate

it’s for the chain line…enough said

sweet, thanks guys. turns out i had it right way on any way
