wiiiide road shoes

This. Sidi & Mavic are super narrow. I’ve had both. And the mavic cleat holes are too far forward.

I got the dremel out on my keo cleats to give me a bit more room to slide them back. My next shoes will be sidi ergo 3’s again. Far superior shoe!

My 2c on bike shoes:

I personally found the S-Works shoe to be a narrower fit through the toe box than their Expert road shoe, so maybe take a look at the latter if you like specialized gear, I’ve been riding it for 6 months and love it.

Similarly, avoid the temptation to size up in length just to get the width you need. If you’re having to do this, then move on to another shoe type.

BUT, Everyone’s foot is (very) different. Make sure you try them on first. Also, try them on immediately after a decent ride on a hot day, your feet can expand up to a whole european size so you want to make sure you will still fit them in this state, otherwise you open yourself up to a whole host of feet problems that could have easily been avoided.

Bont ?

Haha this is FoA… Even I’d think twice about spending $1000 on a pair of shoes…
And they are not the prettiest cycling shoes l

Another piece of the puzzle fell into place today. My ‘problem’ foot as a very weak arch and my ankle has limited movement from lack of muscle control. (has the full range of movement but not the motor control)

Paying more attention to my pedal stroke this morning and because I can’t push through my arch all power goes through the ball of my foot which pushes/squashes the outside of the ball of my foot against the shoe. As well as strains my ankle. Still gotta find time to go try on shoes, but now knowing that seems I also need some good arch support, a tighter shoe and a steve hogg-esque cleat placing… peoples thoughts?

I just got some Mavic MTB shoes - they are nice and narrow but my feet are soo narrow I would like a even narrower fit…

In the interim, is there enough room in your current shoes to make some arch support with some cotton wool balls? Obviously not ideal but it might give you an idea of how a decent remedy would work, or how much more room you’d need in another pair of shoes. Stacking more padding in you shoe will by default make it tighter as well, so that would be two wins for 30 cents worth of cotton.

raided the bathroom and found cotton ball’s and make up removal pads. Taped up to the bottom of the insole. Havent ridden on it yet, thanks for the idea.

So on a couple of easy commutes today not on the roadie, seems it’s evened out the pressure in my foot alot. My foot is now pretty damn tired from using different muscles.

Finding a shoe that works might be more involved than I thought :frowning:

Finally got some time do to stuff I want, not stuff I have to do, so tried on some shoes finally.

I’d be surly if I had to work a sunday too. But FFS how hard is it to give good service and solid advice? If you don’t know something just say it. Northwave MTB are a fraction to tight across the outside of my foot, assuming this transfers across to the road range?

Off to try on Giro tomorrow, with any luck they will fit. I hope so, the garneau is ugly.

I thought I’d add some of my experience as I also have wide (for my size feet).

I’m currently riding Bontrager shoes, which I feel are a little wider than Specialized. I also use MTB pedals on all my bikes, so the shoes I’ve tried have been all MTB

So far I’ve tried:
Sidi Mega: not as wide as the name makes out
Bont: Sooo stiff, uncomfortably so for regular use
Lake: Big and bulky, wide but also high and dug into my ankle
Giro HV: like Side Mega, not as wide and the name indicates
Northwave: some have flexy uppers, which will move outwards, but the sole/last didn’t seem that wide
Mavic: not wide and like Lake also high and dug into my ankle
Diadora: fits like a Sidi, flexible upper but not wide

My wide feet come from wearing Vibram 5fingers and Vivo Barefoot shoes.
Due to wearing these more foot-shaped shoes, it highlights how misshapen most shoe lasts are. No human foot tapers to a central point, yet that’s how most shoes are shaped… Bont are the only ones who have it closest, yet hey still taper from the big toe joint instead of staying straight until the end of the big toe, which pushes the toe inwards.

That said, most people’s feet are crushed into a taper from years of wearing “normal” shoes, so that last works for them.

I’m interested in your comment about having poor motor control in your ankle. I’ve also been thinking that this might be part of my problems - I’d be very interested to know who diagnosed this for you?

Tried the Giro Factor on today - was one size too big but is a serious contender.

Would also like to try the trans HV as well. But I think I’m on a winner with these.

If I point my toes and try pull my toes up, it’s a guessing game to if it will pull left, right or just come up straight. Similar if I push out, it might lead with my little toe or just go out flat. I also cannot physically lift my toes high enough so my foot is flat to the ground, stops a few degree’s short. (still have the full range of movement, just not the motor control)

Spent a heap of time as a kid doing various specialist visits etc. Gave up on it years ago.
