Women's Around Australia record attempt

Day 40- 236km to Karratha

Day 41- 142km to Robe River

Day 42- 120km to Nanutarra

Day 43- 228km to Minilya Roadhouse

At the 6 week mark she was on 7,165km. Currently 772km/5 days ahead of the record. Roughly a week of headwinds with a bunch of flat tyres has been a really hard patch for her to get through.

Day 44- 144km to Carnarvon

Day 45- 198km to Overlander Roadhouse

Day 46- 229km to Northampton

Those big days have pushed her advantage over the record to 881km. This morning she ticked over the 8,000km mark since July 3. I haven’t done that much for the whole year!

Thanks for posting the updates LDR.

These Long Distance Riders are in a different league. So, so impressive.

I’ve managed two rides over 200km this year, weeks apart, and she’s doing several per week, on top of 120+ every single day. Just incredible.

Day 52- 113km to Wave Rock

Today she’ll pass the 9,000km mark on her way to Esperance, her 4th checkpoint after Brisbane, Broome, and Perth.

Day 55- 204km to Norseman

Day 56- 190km to Balladonia

You might think from those big distances that she’s a superwoman just powering along but she’s very open about struggling and doing it tough. The next few days are only going to be harder, with a crosswind today becoming a headwind for the rest of the way across the Nullarbor. At best she’ll see a tailwind mid next week.

At the end of Week 8 she’s covered 9,575km at an average of just under 171km/day.

Day 57- 181km to Caiguna.

Headwind all the way the poor sod. Today will most likely be 157km to Madura Pass, then 181km to Eucla, and 196km to Nullarbor Roadhouse. That leaves 223km to Penong (or a short day of 91km stopping at Yalata Roadhouse) before the towns/roadhouses finally get closer together.

Day 59- 116km to Mundrabilla

Day 60- 66km to Eucla

That’s 10,000km done, and this morning she’s into South Australia! After 6 straight days of headwinds she’s currently got SSW crosswinds gusting to 30kmh. That should swing to a tailwind tomorrow before swirling all over the place for the rest of the week.

Day 63- 219km to Poochera

1,162km to Week 9. The consistency from week to week has been amazing, her biggest so far is 1,298 and shortest 1,135. Total now at 10,737km, 1,035km ahead of record. If she can maintain that consistency through Victoria and NSW she’s looking at taking about 10 days (or 1500+km) off the record.

How does this fit in with the men’s record?

I seem to recall some rocket assisted life form pretending to be a cyclist set that a year or two back?

I rememeber Poit set a recumbent one some years ago but forget how long it took him.

“Rocket assisted life form” is an excellent description for Lachlan Morton :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: His supported record is 30d9hr59m, and that’s getting damn close to unbreakable. He had great luck with weather right through, and his level of fitness was superhuman. I can’t give details yet but there is someone with that record in their sights.

Peter Heal’s time (unsupported) in 2010 was 48d23h37m, that was broken by Bryan Taaffe with a time of 43d23h1m in 2022. The minimum distance required by RRAA for the record is 14,200km, Peter had done 14,913km. Bryan was determined to put the record beyond question so he ended up covering 15,006km. The men’s unsupported upright bike record is 50d14h7m set by Loz Walters ON A FIXIE in 2025, beating Erik Staarup’s 51d47m from back in 2008.

If things keep on as they are and Stacey gets back to Springfield in under 92.5 days it will be the only RRAA record where the unsupported time is faster than the supported.

I happened to see her event fbook entry some hours ago. (Stacey Maree)

Not having an easy time of it recently.

She posted from Coonalpyn, which is about halfway between Adelaide and the Victoria Border.

Looked rather tired and expressed her disappointment at losing her Garmin Messenger in Adelaide early this morning (Tuesday).

She seemed to really struggle with Adelaide, tried to link up various bicycle-friendly routes and got lost trying to do so.

Ended up on dangerous roads and at times was forced to use the footpath.

Which she discovered was extremely bumpy and hence the Garmin device got jettisoned, she says somewhere on Fullarton Rd.

But was not aware she had lost it until 4 hrs later, by which time turning back was out of the question.

Hope things get easier for her.

I suspect that it might have been a good idea if she had invited her Adelaide followers to help her with the navigation process.

Thanks for adding that Ernestra. As I’m not on fb wouldn’t have seen the details.

And thanks again to LDR for the ongoing status updates.

If you don’t do Fbook, you can get the gist of her adventures on Strava.
I’ve just looked at Strava and she did Nhill to Ararat today - 170 km. She said that she started later than usual because Wednesday was a big one - Coonalpyn to Nhill, 194 km battling headwinds most of the way.

But her mood was significantly lifted because some kind people in Adelaide managed to find her Garmin and have posted it to her contact in Melbourne.
She must be battling a lot of tiredness. Remember that this is an unsupported effort and after each day’s long ride she has to prepare food, look after bike issues, find a shop to buy stuff for the next day, and do some social media etc.
