15mm crank bolt removal/installation

So i picked up some sugino/campy 15mm crank bolts.

Tried installing and looks like my 15mm socket wont fit into the crank arm ‘holes’ to install onto the spindle.

Do i need a specific tool or can i get a ‘thin wall’ 15mm socket from somewhere?

If so, any ideas where best to get it from? Bunnos? Super cheap?

cheers jase

ps, sorry for the noob question.

get hold of a 1/4" or 3/8" drive socket, they have thinner walls- I have turned down 1/2" drive spockets before now- or better still a proper campag or similar “peanut butter” spanner.

No, use a 15mm socket if you want to avoid damaging the bolt, you just need to get a nice quality one which will generally have thinner walls. I got a shiny one from super cheap auto and it does the job nicely.

as shwab said… better quality sockets are usually thinner

just take in a caliper ruler or your current socket and see if you can get a thinner socket

Pinball Wizard is not advocating using the wrong size socket, he’s saying use a socket with a smaller drive as they tend to have narrower walls.

cheers fellas,

i actually went out and bought that exact model from super cheap - 1/2 inch drive 15mm, but it dosnt fit the crank arm holes.

I might go back and try exchange with a 3/8 drive one, if all else fails ill get a specific ‘peanut’ one.

Some crank removal tools have these sockets with them.
Don’t have time to find the link but Ice tools do a tool that has a 15 mm open ender, 14 mm socket style and a 15 mm socket style. Not a bad tool and has a rubber handle so goes in you pocket without ripping your hipster jeans

Can you replace the crank bolts with an allen key style bolt or are you trying to keep original?

Yeah…

One of these should do the trick.

15mm and 14mm at one end and a pedal spanner at the other end. The 15mm fits in my crank arms (Sugino Mighty Comp and Ofmega Mistrals) no problems.

About $15. Any “good” bike shop should have them. Mine looks exactly the same as the pic. LIFU and Ice Toolz make em.

Don’t bother with Supercheap etc. Get one of these spanners. Awesome to have in your bag all the time to undo wheel nuts, tighten crank arms and so forth.

I have two, I cut one in half so it fits in my hip pack.

smurf - oh i can use allen key ones, i just thought the sugino bolts would be nice to match the rest, ie sugino mightys, on a sugino bb etc.

jln - yeh, might see if i can pick on up from the local store after work today, or ebay if all else fails.

They’re totally worth it. The 15mm is slightly thinner to fit in crank arms holes (you can kinda see from the picture).

Come to mention it, it was equivalent job from supercheap in 3/8" drive that I used that fit my sugino mightys. That lifu tool looks the job but and it’s always handy to have a nice pedal wrench.

gona get the wifey to exchange sockets at super cheap tomorrow, if it still dosnt fit, ive found that LIFU wrench on ebay for about $25 landed.

fingers crossed the 3/8 drive 15mm works.

what JLN not ZLTN said, seriously, don’t use sockets that are the wrong size. just go and buy this tool for 12 bucks or whatever it is and you’ll then have a nice all purpose pedal wrench, track nut, crank bolt ultimate super tool.

Having just gone through this with my non-drive side crank arm coming loose during a ride, I’ve switched to allen-key driven bolts. I can therefore tighten them with a multi-tool mid ride rather than needing to carry yet another tool.

Swapped the 1/2" drive for a 3/8" and wallah…fit perfect. Comparing side by side looks like it was maybe 1mm or so difference in diameter, but obviously enough for the 1/2" drive not to fit.

So there you have it fellas, 3/8" socket for 15mm crank bolt installation/removal.

Love it.

voila

You forgot the grave on the ‘a’.

Didn’t think you could do it in this, turns out you can: à

I still prefer wallah though, I was being genuine… it’s very Australian.

yeh, in my mind i was definitely sayin in with an aussie accent :stuck_out_tongue:
