I’ve only ever laced 36 hole rims and hubs before using a 3 cross pattern.
Today I’m attempting a 40 spoke, 4 cross pattern.
My question is after my first ‘lead’ spoke do I use every 4th spoke hole on the rim as I would in a 36 spoke rim?

yes. Just follow the steps exactly the same way as you would with a 36 hole wheel.

Why 40 spokes?
That’s how many holes there are in the hub.

These hubs are brilliant. When you do a 3 cross 32 spoke lace on the front hub and a 4 cross 40 spoke lace on the rear you can use the same length spoke (providing the ERD of the rims are the same).
Very clever when cyclists/mechanics didn’t have 100 different spoke length to choose from.
That is a obvious answer to a obvious question.
