50th anniversary Campagnolo

50th anniversary group set

damn beautiful!

Just to give a little historic perspective.

Nobody ever raced on these groupsets. No pro or amateur.
For the most people were laughed at, any bike with a 50th gruppo could only be owned by a wanker.
They sat on bike shop shelves for as much a decades, especially as they were so expensive and much better working parts were made by Campagnolo and other manufacturers soon after introduction.
Eventually they were mostly sold at discounts as there was little interest in them.
They are heavier then the Super Record kit it’s based on.

Now it’s evident that I’m of touch with the market (and reality?) and these 50th gruppo’s are keenly sought after, but I’ll always have the same reaction when I see it on a bike, and that’s the same for anyone driving a Porsche 911 with an automatic gearbox - Wankers !!!

If you wanted real jewelry … Suntour Superbe Pro would put this 50th gruppo to shame, and if it’s just to look at plain jane C record tops the list. Of course this is subjective and personal but I know better about these things than anyone

The ultimate “box porn” that I have ever seen is the old Gios frames that came in white polystyrene which was embossed on the top. I’ve only ever seen one since and it’s owned by a private collector in NYC. Very stylish, ultimate in many respects as it included the panto chainring and steapost, jersey, cap and waterbottle. I never bought one new so never experienced the dilemma of leaving it in the box or actually using it. So much drooling at these “back in the day” and very rare in Oz.

id build up an '85 colnago mexico with this group set, only to see it how its meant to be seen (on a bike… right??) but yeah, wouldnt ride it.

Oh my.
