An Ozzie bike with a Japanese heritage!!!

Okay,

I’ve been rabbiting on about this for a very very very very very long time. But the all the pieces have now been collected and the build is beginning today. Thanks to everyone that gave a headsup on a piece for sale, or found parts in their bits box to help on this one.

The frame is sort of an unknown to me. I bought it off a guy in Geelong about a year ago. OZ in the top of the fork crown and OZ08 and TO60 stamped in the Bottom Bracket. Its built out of Columbus TSX. If anyone has any information, please let me know.

List of Bits as follows.

Wheels

  1. Sunshine (Used to make Professional 36 hole Hubs (NJS stamped) on mavic rims. These have polished up a treat, but I’m having trouble getting the old glue off the rims - has anyone got any tips for this?
  2. Suntour Superbe Pro 36 hole high flange hubs on Campag omega Rims. I’m thinking about changing these rims some time later on and getting a beautiful set of Arayas or something.

    Undecided as yet - Suggestions?

Some photos taken hastily last night pre riding to work today with frame BB and headset.

I’m planning on getting it to DISC this Sunday. Hopefully on the Sunshines. It all depends how my first foray into glueing on Singles go! :o - Any tips? These are really beautiful hubs. The Superbe Pros, need a service, but if they are a step up from these as I assume they will be, I’ll be a very very happy man. Sheldon Brown has an interesting bit of info on this company here http://www.sheldonbrown.com/japan.html#sansin

Anyway, there you go.

Its started. No idea when It’ll be finished, but I’m hoping not too long!!!

Lats

sweet mother of gawd!

You’re a true connoisseur of fine bicycles I daresay. Polish is good.

  • Joel

My fingers hurt!!!

Did you notice the bling on the pedal bodies. They came up a treat mate. How are the campag pedals going? I reckon they would polish up just as good!!

I did notice the bodies - you’re incredibly dedicated. I polished a rim yesterday to remove 25 years of tarnish. Ouch!

The campags haven’t seen any track action yet - I’ve got to build up my proper track wheels (28h D-A on aerohead) and wait for the track season to start before I take off the SPDs.

They may get a little polishing though

  • Joel

AutoSolv and elbow grease!!

Polish…see blakey. He is the true master…

VERY NICE INDEED…

Rockin’, it looking the goods 8)

What? The only superbe stuff I have is a pair of cranks on my new Kerry Hopkins. Who’s masquerading as me?

Ya, it’s my yob.

Although I just spent two weeks in Gladstone power station polishing steam pipes for replication, kinda kills the urge to polish up the new bike.

For ultimate results, start with SiC paper, up to 1200 or 4000 grit, grinding alternately at 90? to the previous grind to remove all prior scratches, then ethanol wash, follow with 6um diamond suspension and lube, another wash and finish with 1um diamond susp. Clear coat if you don’t want oxidation to dull the shine in short order. You’ll be able to see your ugly mug in it, but if you haven’t done the prep properly you’ll also see every fucking scratch sticking out like dogs balls. A vibrating polisher with walnut media or similar would help on irregular and awkwardly shaped stuff. (See a gun supplies shop for a shell tumbler)

Quicker method (Easier on fingers and sanity too): SiC paper, 600&1200, autosol, buff on, polish off. Repeat with Autosol as necessary.

PM me if you need SiC paper, I can arrange some.

edit: lots of pretty parts, looking good.

Need I say more…he is the MASTER of shine!!

oh my gawwd… sick paper!

Hey Lats,

Is Autosolv readily available from (I’m guessing) auto stores?

I presume that it’s a cut-and-polish product for car paint?

(suddenly piqued my interest cos I read Sheldon’s Sunshine description and realised that I have a set of the 'ProAm model high-flange hub" with the star cut-outs! Would be a shame to not polish them up good and proper if they are what they seem to be

the front hub is visible - what do you think?)

Cheers!

oh sorry, forgot to say that the bike and bits all look rather nice!

mike - that link doexn’t work for me  do you hve another?

Supercheap definitely has it, in a toothpaste tube or a tub. There’s also Maserati metal polish impregnated in wadding. It’s in the same section as the paint polish.

aaah, sorry Nath, try here:

click on one of Dan’s pics and you can see the hubs there - I’m sure they have the star pattern described.

Cheers for that Blakey, I’ll have to make polishing the bike one of my weekend jobs now…

Just out of interest, I have some old BH Airlights whose red anodising has pretty much worn off, I presume that I can polish up both the alu flangs and the steel bodies using the fine sandpaper method? I may give the Autosolv a try first up.[/img]

You could get them re anodised, but that’s probably more than you want to spend. You can do it yourself, but it’s not that easy.

Anodising is just heavy oxidation, dyed if it’s coloured. So yeah, wet silicon carbide paper and them polish and you’ll be gleaming again.

Mike, that thermos is beautiful! maybe if you got some heatshrink tube onto a biddon cage, you could wear it out

You got it.

I got it from AutoBarn. 9.99 a tube. Just used some polishing rags from safeway for 1.99. Easy.

It does take a bit of elbow grease and i am sure 2 -3 goes will make everything come up even better.

let us know how you go.

Wow, two fully sic [sic*] jokes in one day.

Silicon Carbide FWIW.

  • this one’s the Latin sic.
