My only bike is a fixed/brakeless and before signing up for it I just wanted to see if:
A. people think its possible to ride it on that my bike (I’m talking about the 250km).
and
B. if anyone else is up for it? Be good to maybe do it as a more steady fixed group ride if people are keen, rather than the head down, race style, the geared riders will do it in.
Failing that we can always ride to the pub?
cheers
si

there are people here that I’m sure have ridden it fixed before, whether you could do it I have no idea. no fuckin way would I wanna do it fixed, but each to their own. I don’t think there are any restrictions on what you’re allowed to ride, but keep in mind riding brakeless in Victoria is illegal, so you miiiight get pulled up for it.
I’ve never ridden round the bay but get the impression it’s not all that great, with ppl preferring to organise their own to limit the number of muppets out on the road. I’d also suggest just riding to portsea & back, the stretch from Geelong back to Melbourne is average at best. you could always put up a ride here and see if ppl are keen to show you the way.
Nice one! Thanks for that. Always good to get some inside knowledge.
The Portsea ride sounds like a really good one. Ride down there in a big group, have a few beers at the hotel and then ride back.
I didn’t know about the no brakes thing in Victoria. Do people get pulled up alot then?
The brakeless debate has been done to death on here. Sometimes you get pulled up. Sometimes you don’t. Do it if you’re comfortable with that possibility.
Fact is, riding long distances on track bikes is shit.
There are bunch of dudes who have done the Portsea beer ride a number of times. Come Spring time, I’m sure it will happen again.
I enjoy a long ride on a track bike! Needless to say this will probably change once owning a road bike.
As far as brakes are concerned if you ride sensibly and follow road rules rather than riding like you’re imitating mash sf/macaframa you should be fine.
Yeah same here! The last few km’s always hurt a bit but Its good to get out of town and put some distance in. After a while the constant stopping at traffic lights start to wind me up.
Thanks for the advice, thats good to hear. I don;t ride like that so I should be fine. And if on the off chance I do get pulled over I’ll put on my most plummy English accent and say Im on holiday here (although that might make the situation worse)…
Sweet, thanks for the heads up! Was going to do some specific training rides to see how hard it is to ride fixed for such a period of time as you do in atb?
Hey BMX kid! Yeah, I recognise you too geezer. Sorry, didnt see your post earlier.
I reckon I’ll do it… not sure which one yet. Probs one of the 210km ones, Queenscliff or Sorrento I guess. Need to get some miles in first though… been off the bike a bit in recent months.
You’re welcome to join. I will be riding with gears.
I only did the 210km option. Apparently there were two other fixed riders. I was so wrecked after it. I honestly don’t know how anyone can sit on a saddle for that long.
