Basic single speed CX bike to ride the shit out of?

You can’t beat a pompino or the geared version

this guy

and Generic Hipsters?

so 2 frames out of maybe 50 odd All City frames on here.

Doesn’t seem like a great ratio… but its not a very good sample.

anyway:

I’d look at the Singular Kite, SS or gears, Etomato’s turned out pretty sweet…

But if you wanna do some light touring you could do worse than a cross-check, boring and a bit heavy but can fit fat tyres (45s) and gears or single speed.

if you ride a 58 there is still a Voodoo wazoo on velogear.com.au

edit: read the OP, bikepacking style touring is possible on a SS, I’ve done it on my MTB, but it means if you wanna ride the hills you need really low gear (I had 32-18, 26" wheels) so you spin like crazy on the flat to go 20kmh, was actually kinda fun, also gear small/light enough is expensive if you don’t have it already.

Looking at the drop outs on the latest all city frames seems as though they’ve recognised the issue and changed them

Sweet, good news for all.

Esp as my finger always hovers over the ‘buy’ button on those things

buy a pomp. rack mounts. fender mounts. ss. tire clearance. cheap. /end discussion

which ones? the track ended ones still have a hennepin bridge in them.

The god awful purple nature boy frames have different drop outs- hey thousandth post.

Shitty pics but you get the drift

This

^, yep, its probably the only in one the OP’s budget too.

Get a Pomp. Cheap and easy to build up.

Where are people buying the pomp frames from? The UK?

Melbourne. Google it, I can’t be bothered.

Or the Macinato if you prefer road calipers

On-One Macinato Singlespeed Frame

In Melbourne you can get them from http://raceworx.com.au/

But at current exchange rates it’s probably cheaper from the UK.

yep.

nope.

UK website is cheaper even with shipping.

Your budget of a complete for $400-$500 may be a bit tight. And after some looking I dont think there is an off the shelf SS CX bike under $1k. (I could be wrong)

The On-One frame and fork looks very good value for money. I did a quick price up:

  • Pompino frame and fork $320
  • Bar n stem $70
  • Bar tape or grips $25
  • Headset $50
  • Cranks $100
  • BB $45
  • Chain $20
  • Front sprocket $50
  • Rear freewheel $25
  • Tyres and tubes $80
  • Brakes levers $20
  • V-brakes $50
  • Brakes cables $20
  • Seat post $30
  • Seat $50

Plus only thing I couldn’t find was some SS CX wheels. So lets guess and say $250.

So that all brand new parts some form your local bike store and some from the net. Around $1200 for a custom SS XC. Thinking about doing this myself.

On-One Pompino Drop Bar Urban Bike

$800 delivered. Some of the parts are so-so but.

got a Specialized Singlecross for sale if this fits. sick bike, great fun… most of a build available (i’m basically short a set of cranks)
