Basic single speed CX bike to ride the shit out of?

Melbourne was cheaper when I got mine and, being in Melbourne, no waiting.

The parts are all ok for the price and on par with most completes solid here in that price range.

Just out of interest has anyone used those Midge bars?
Had a look at a set on the weekend and they are very short in the drops.

Love Midges, have used them on a couple of singlespeed builds, including CX. Though being a MTber, I prefer shallow drops. Actually I prefer risers on most builds, but Midges work for me if I want a drop bar.

Today, Velo Cult.

There is, after I gave my NB a clean, what appears to be a paint crack in that exact location. Let’s hope it’s just that.

shorts drops are short.
I have size medium hands and they are just a bit too short for me, tended to hammer the heel of my palm on the end of the bar. champagne corks as bar ends helped a bit
running woodchippers now which are nice and looooong (drop and hand positioning in the drops are otherwise similar to midges AFIR).
The midges also cant the brake levers over quite a bit. My tektro R200 levers have squarish hoods which are fine on traditional road bars but canted over on the midges dug into my hands a bit. YMMV with different levers

Yeah, I have the same levers so won’t look at the Midge bars any further.
Do have a set of Origin8 Gary dirt drops which I was going to put on the Nakisi but never happened.
Certainly long in the drop section than the Midge:

This sounds great, if it fits.

If you’re going SS but want a bit more versatility, the “double singlespeed” thing works pretty well, i.e. with two chainrings and a cassette with two cogs (or a White Industries double freewheel).

I’ve got my Singular Kite setup like that. 42/40 on the front and 16/18 on the back, so I get either 70" or 60" depending on the combo. Keeping a 2-tooth difference both ways keeps the chain length the same = no need to adjust the brakes. Pics: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/112403672217167595940/albums/5890435780554682865

For your brief, I wouldn’t recommend the Singular Kite, as it has no rack or guard mounts. A Pompino or second hand Cross Check is going to be hard to beat.

What did you end up buying/building?

I just checked this an well over $800 landed.

State Bicycle Co ‘Warhawk’ looks good. Cheap, cheerfull, rack mounts…

Thanks your right it looks awesome!
