I had a very close call with my track bike last night. I’m taking it as a sign to get bike insurance, I have actually called a few places but its pretty hard to choose since they all seem very similar.
I was wondering if anyone has had good/bad experiences with certain companies. I should mention I’m mainly after insurance that’ll cover me with crashes while racing although being covered for theft also would be good.
FWIW, i’ve seen the big name bike specific insures go from really good, to utter crap in the last 4 years. Claims used to be covered almost without question, but now theyve turned to nickel and diming on everything. i handled a claim for a c50 that the customer binned ($700 PA policy), the insurer only paid for ‘repair costs’, so wheel rebuild, a single sram shifter, a rear derrailleur and for the frame they went on ebay and found a second hand frame as cheap as possible and quoted that as the replacement cost. the whole process also took about 3 months of shit farting around. needless to say good customer was not very happy.
What a.davies said,
We had a big crash in out sat group a few months back.
The guys with bike specific insurance got reamed.
The only repaired or replaced broken parts.
A guy grazed his new red shifter and they said no its not broken.
The thing was it was fucked and in repairable but still shifted, his frame was fucked so the did the same, it was a $4k Scott and they said they can source them for $2200 so that’s all they gave him.
It was insured for the full retail but they wouldn’t replace it for that?
I now have mine through suncorp home and contents for $10k but it’s nearly bloody $70 a month
yup, this. the wifey looked into this a while ago and it seemed quite possible that it would be better to just get home/contents and find a provider that covers your bike throughout your travels also. i know she found at least one but cannot remember who it was.
ask that n8 guy also. im pretty sure he has looked into it also.
I was with velosure, but it was too pricey for me (around $40 per month for a $3,000 roadie and $1,000 steel commuter). I’ve now switched them over to my contents insurance and specified them under an “Away from home” clause, which covers me for damage anywhere in Australia and NZ. Worked out a fair bit cheaper.
Not sure what they’ll be like if/when I claim, but sounds like they can’t be worse than velosure and I’m happy to save some dollars in the meantime.
Or just accept if you stack/crash your bike you’ll have to pay to repair/replace. As they say in racing, don’t ride something you can’t afford to replace.
lol this is hilarious, I can’t be the only one who thinks this. I’m not having a go at anyone that uses insurance, I’m just saying this a second option which is to go without insurance, save a lot of $$ on premiums, and just repair or replace as you go.
So seeing as the big V sounds like a pretty shit choice, who are other people with ?
Edit: I read the other threads that Blakey linked too but they didn’t offer too much in terms of information.
If never thought of it this way. Putting a couple hundred away a month for possible bike repairs could be a possible option. I would still like to check out some more insurance options though.
