Brisbane Framebuilders

Antmandan’s Hoffy has got me thinking about what people can dig up about Brisbane framebuilders.

Builders that I have heard of (and badges I think they have worked under):

Tom Wallace - Special frames
Eric Hendren - Hoffy and Hendren frames
Darryl McCullough - Hoffy, Hendren and LLewellyn
Joe Cosgrove - Frezoni (not sure if he was also the guy out the back at Tom Wallace as the framebuilder when they still had the bake oven)
Brett Richardson - Hoffy, Beretto
The guy up in Petrie Terrace who was there for over 50 years until about 6 or 7 years ago(was it Record?)

This table is from the Canberra Bicycle Museum

It has been poorly reproduced by myself.

State Place Frame Builder Brand
QLD Albion Brett Richardson Beretto
QLD Ashby Syd King The King
QLD Brisbane Bernard Alamai
QLD Brisbane Tom Sheppard Kangaroo
QLD Brisbane Darrell McCulloch Llewellyn bikes
QLD Brisbane Tom Wallace Special
QLD Chermside Brett Richardson Berretto
QLD Moorooka Joe Cosgrove Joco & Freezoni
QLD Normandy Jack Pesch Rocket
QLD Sandgate van Workhoven
QLD Sandgate Eric Hendren Hoffy Bikes
QLD Lutwyche Tom Wallace Special

Cool - Jack Pesch was the guy up at Petrie Terrace (Normanby), and as a young kid I remember seeing Ashby’s but not for a loong time.

I would love to see an example of the following brands because they would be rare and I have never seen one - The King (I think they migt have been branded Ashby), Kangaroo and Joco.

Van Workoven(sic) was a popular builder on the Gold Coast late 80’s - looks like he might have done his apprenticeship at Hoffy at Sandgate under Eric Hendren like I think Darryl McCullough and Brett Richardson did.

Was there every a Mr Hoffy - I would like to track down some history of track racing in Brisbane.

A few old timers have told me there was an old board velodrome at Kelvin Grove in the park next to Ensign Laundry. I also remember the concrete Hawthorne velodrome, but was there a board track there before that?

Soren Son from the GC.

Love mine. Soon to be passed on to a worthy rider. I believe their (father & son) repaints were decalled as “Special” too?

It’s Van Werkhoven btw.

LWaB will be able to provide plenty more info on local builders if he’s lurking.

Bike revolution has a Tom Wallace Special track bike for sale that I want rather badly. Love to pick up one of Tom Wallace’s bikes - that was the brand of my very first bike.

Tom

If that’s the one I think it is too bad they got it for free and will no doubt want stupid $ for it :expressionless:
