Hi all
In recent years, the cost of a red light fine (disobeying traffic signal) while riding a pushie in Victoria has increased to $298 - quite an excessive amount IMO.
My question to those outside of Victoria: How much are you slugged for a red light fine in your state/territory?

^though there’s pressure at present to level the fine on a bike with that of a car due to the apparent frequency with which cyclists run reds
No idea. I don’t know anyone who’s ever been booked in Sydney. Bound to change eventually I guess.

heavymetal - SanEsteban was fined in redfern I think. You’d think in the fern the cops would have better stuff to do.
All bicycle offences are $57 in NSW. Including but not listed, running a red light.
Rider not wearing helmet fitted and fastened - $57
Riding bicycle on footpath - $57
Ride without visible front white light - $57
Ride without a working warning device (i.e. a bell) - $57

Vic = the nanny state. It’s just F@#KED !
I imagine most riders in Sydney are committing at least one of these offences. They’d clean up if they enforced them.
Kinda related … if you do get caught, do they ask for your driver’s license and if so why?
form of ID to write the ticket out to? they’d take your passport if you carry that around id guess!
There’s a very simple solution to this…
This thread is serving an important public service- all red-light running hipsters move to Adelaide!!
I just find it Orwellian. I left NYC because I felt it was like a Police State.
I don’t have a clear picture as to what form of ID is required if riding a bicycle, I still don’t understand what the NSW RTA website demands when it states …
Under NSW legislation a bicycle is considered as a vehicle.
Bicycle laws and penalties
I refuse to submit my driver’s license if I’m riding a bike as my driver’s license is not required to ride a bike. I haven’t been pinched for anything yet.
beat the cop to death with a ulock?
fuck that, $300 for running a red light in victoria on a bike
By the way do those red light cameras fire off when a cyclist goes through the trigger?

Dunno, there’s a camera up the top of webb street I’ve been wanting to try it with, I just haven’t had the chance to get there late at night yet.

No… the same way the sensors don’t pick up that you are waiting for a red light and inevitably jump it anyway.
