costs of building a fixie ?

Rolling on bare rims, Venice beach style? Always factor in a hundered $ for ‘the little things’ you’ll forget like tyres, tubes, grips, lubricants (if you don’t have any already). If it’s your first build and you don’t have tools and can’t borrow any there will be those to factor in too.

The cell bike I am looking at is only $400 including tubes/tyres and postage.
So the cell is even cheaper, and they have the same wheels.
And altough I love the shape of the visp frame, I can’t stand those welds.
I would end up smoothing them out, and that is a lot of work.

It takes a long time to build a bike - It’s all those little bits… Additionally there is the cost of tools - Crank puller, chainwhip, lockring tool etc. Over a few years you build up a little cache of bits, but the first build is always pretty pricey. I think it’s worth the time and effort though. You learn a lot along the way, and in the process learn more about bikes. It will become an addiction though, and you’ll be forever building your next perfect bike…

VISPs are horrible. Mullet is better option, namely being chromoly. Parts are a bit poxy tho’ - really not a fan of that wheelset or the crankset (a crap drivechain = a crap ride). so if you can push your budget up a bit you’ll get a much nicer fixed experience. These ones on Wiggle are not that much more and are higher spec throughout:
Wiggle | Charge Plug Grinder 2010 Single Speed Bikes
Wiggle | Charge Plug Racer 2010 Single Speed Bikes
Wiggle | Charge Plug Freestyler 2010 Single Speed Bikes

there’s also a 56cm steamroller in the for sale section for $650. send the seller a pm and see if it’s still available.

they are meant to be a great bike for the price

EDIT - even cheaper now, $599. i’ll even link it for you

^ +1. the surly frame has steeper angles than the Charges = a more nippy, track bike-ish ride. And its probably lighter too.
Also both the surly and Charges are build like brick shit houses.

Thanks for the links dice.

Personally like the look of the mullet wheels, the wheels of the charge don’t look as deep.
I can’t comment on quality, but if i don’t like the look I won’t ride it enough to know the difference anyway…
How much is a good crankset worth?
The difference with shippping is nearly $240, i’m sure there is enough financial room to upgrade the crankset ?

@rolly, the link doesn’t work? no access?

i still think this is the best (cycling) deal out

HASA 2011 Fixie Bike

350+postage, got it for my mate cos he just wanted to try
IMO, rips into the cell mallet specs wise, rides nicely too
big ticket items are the reynolds 520 frame and weinmann dp18 wheelset

holy fuck that is pretty good.

Alternatively you could grab a cheap frame from somewhere and we can whack my aerospoke and h+son on there, with a pair of lasco’s, be mint as.

You would be lost without your spoke

To be honest I don’t even ride that bike any more.
I ride my road bike or my mountain bike, I’m temped to sell my fixed gear and buy something else

^ give you $250 for the bike right now!

$250’ll get you the aerospoke, or the cranks/chainring.

How much for the whole bike then ?

i’d sell it for $1500
or $1300 minus the saddle

I have a cx bike to buy.

im doing customization bike in Indonesia (Jakarta, Bali) , ussualy the costing price is around $500-700$ (include shipping if theres any). if you intrested just visit my website (recently uploaded), thanks !
