just wondering if anyone knows anything about these or has one? were they one of the great aussie frames of their era?
i’ve searched google but information seems scarce. i did manage to stumble across a bobfarley.org but i’m not keen to vote for an american senator!!! the only info i can seem to find is through other australian bike forums, and it’s not overly informative.
i know my girlfriend’s dad has a farleigh roadie in the shed (it’s very very dusty) and i’m wondering if it’s worth dragging out and getting back on the road. i was inspired by Simon’s restored Concorde thread and would like a roadie in the shed as well as the current fixed steed.
i also think i bought the above bike back when i first moved to melbourne and had no fucking clue what i was looking at. yes it was an expensive fix. yes it is still in my shed in the condition i bought it in. yes it’s in pieces after a friend decided to hacksaw it in half for some reason…!!! got a set of decent road bars and a set of mavic open pro’s with campy hubs off it though. whole bike cost me $150…
hey i had a mint farleigh track frame once that i swapped with Track ₪₪₪₪ for a Sorenson. The Farleigh was a bit big for me, unfortunate because it was a beautiful frame. it ended up being sold to a cat in the USA and it got smashed up. anyways, they were built in Croydon Melbourne by Bob Farleigh. if you really want to know what the history is then go to DISC and ask him yourself, im pretty sure hes still kicken round there most nights. or you could email TC at fyxomatosis for more info.
peace
Bob still drops by quite often on Thursday nights. theres an FB page dedicated to his famous quotes LOL. Ive known Bob for fair few years and hes a good bloke. Depends on the bike you have as some of Bobs bikes were hand built, some were cheap chinese bikes with farley stickers. He wont take kindly to people with a million and one questions though - hes a bit of a grumpy bastard lol
haha cheers for that. i can’t wait to be a grumpy old bastard, i’m gonna be soooo good at it!!!
i was more after people’s opinion on whether or not a farleigh frame would be worth spending the time and money restoring. don’t know if i’d be keen to ask the man himself that one!!
would i just need to find out a serial number to determine if it was a handbuilt or import?
I have one with the suntour dropouts, reynolds tubing, the group is older ‘superbe pro’. It’s a nice ride for an older bike. Tight angles and clearances too. Does the one you are looking at have the chromed fork? Mine is a pearl’sih white and has a few marks on it, but i dont want to paint over it as I will never get replacement sticker, short of getting some custom made.
thanks for the info. unfortunately i won’t be able to get another look at it until the 3rd of july. i probably started this thread a little early as i don’t actually know much about it or have access to it until then. got a little inspired after user Simon posted his Concorde in another thread. was wanting to know whether the farleigh was worth digging out of the shed or if it was just a run of the mill frame.
as single1 pointed out previously it will depend on the groupset etc and i’m really keen to chase it up, i just can’t get to it at the moment. the only thing i can remember about it is that it’s black and white!! the front fork may be chrome but i have a terrible memory at the best of times!!
ok, so i managed to get a good look at this on the weekend and i’m still unsure as to it’s origins. gut feeling says it’s a cheap import though…
what i managed to decipher in terms of parts:
Araya wheelset (unsure of hubs)
“JJS” stamped cranks
Suntour gear levers on the downtube (i forget the term for them - tension levers??)
Suntour Sprint front derailleur
“Sunbow” rear derailleur
couldn’t see any stamps on the fork ends or drop outs unfortunately. the dropouts did have some numbers stamped into them but they seem pretty random.
Driveside - G0780 (maybe July 1980??)
Non d/s - 739988
if anyone has any ideas i’m always grateful (smart arses need not apply)
