I have been riding an off the shelf SS for about three years to use in the wet season. It came with a flip/flop hub but i never had the balls to get it on the fixed side. I eventually upgraded the rear wheel and had the old flip/flop lying in the garage.
About 3 months ago I decided i needed a hobby, and with a old steel frame and a few bits lying aroungd thought might as well build a flat bar fixie. A few others on this forum inspired me so here it is.
Frame is Olmo (carton of beer 7 years ago)
BB: Campag (used when i was riding this as my first roadie)
Cranks: Campag Centaur (same bike)
Headset: FSA (same bike)
Wheels: Alexrims 500 ( off the abovementioned SS)
Bars, stem and seatpost (off the www at about $84)
all other bits scrounged.
I have used the Flip/flop hub 1/ to save money 2/ incase I get into trouble when I am learning I can flip it.
I have a question re the set up i have used. Is there a risk in putting the spacer outside the cone locknut. I have done this so if I need to flip I can on the side of the road without needing shit tins of tools, and keep the chainline good.
Yes it is a pig I can’t decide on what colour to paint it and how much chrome to leave. Still need to cut the bars add a front brake and after a bit more practice work out it I am going to go clipless or straps(never used straps B4). What riding I have done, I can’t believe how much fun it is going to be, and why it took me so long.
I have taught myself heaps about building and once I decide on colour, think it will come up allright.
Like everything I assume upgrades will follow.
Looking at these photos maybe a photography course is on the cards…
