Fixed Audax

There were a couple of questions about supported and unsupported brevets in Queensland. From http://www.audax.org.au/calendar.asp the next few events are supported, meaning the organiser will (probably) be at the checkpoints to sign your cards, collect your excess clothing and provide some food. I generally treat this as a bonus and do all the stuff I do for an unsupported brevet, carry some food (buy some at checkpoints), carry enough clothes and so on. Most of the brevets in SEQ aren’t too tough for fixed but I’ve been out of the scene for 5 years and the Brits reset my definition of ‘not too tough’.

http://www.deepwater.uklinux.net/www.fixedwheel.org.uk/ contains a number of the audax enthusiasts I rode with in the UK, although Steve Abrahams (right out at the pointy end of the bell curve) tends to do his own thing, usually on 86". I remember riding my 2 speed with Phil Chadwick and Brian Callow both on fixed during the second night of PBP. Phil’s website is http://www.fixed.org.uk/ Audax UK even has its own competition and award scheme for fixers http://www.audax.uk.net/fwc/index.htm

Let me know what you think. I’m planning to do all of the Queensland >200 rides but I’m not sure which, if any, I’ll be doing on fixed.

Rhino and I are keen to do the “big loop”, but most probably geared. Maybe we could have a go at one of the smaller ones fixed  Hope to see you there! Will you be riding small wheels again?

Just to clarify, the big loop is 400km!!! Hence why we might go girly-boy gears.

The other idea though is good, the one that we will do fixed. Blakey, Inane, NDF, Rhino and Rogaine??? Thoughts about doing the AUDAX WINTER BLUES on JUNE 17th…100km Ride around the district west of Toowoomba!

HAHA ! “girly boy”

Yes to the winter blues fixed. at 100k there’s NO EXCUSE! Not even ‘husbandly’ nailing duties!

July. Toowoomba.

That sounds really really cold. Time to order arm/leg warmers.

I’ll give a tentative yes subject to work/spousal bookings, I may be at a power station somewhere in the middle of QLD at the time though (I could do laps of the plant for 100k at the same time!). Do you have to pre-reg or anything? Cost?

AB

PS, isn’t it girly-man?

You DDTT guys been in Toowomba in June ??? Adds another font size to the second D!!

Count me in (at least 'til I count me out.)

Luckily I have a previous engagement on the 20th, otherwise I would find out the hard way that I cannot do 400km.

However, I am up for the 100km fixed in june. Toowoomba is only a bit brisk in june, its august/september that really make you sing soprano.

Would anyone be intereste for the 300km on the 6th of may (girly-man gears). The temp should be lovely up in toowoomba and I might even be able to make that distance.

WOW…you all responded so quickly. Right then, I will send an e-mail off to organise the details. Being thats it five of us, we can all take my car down to the start.

Inane, I cannot do the 300km next weekend, as I have a race on the sunday. I am pretty sure that NDF is out as well, travelling down to Melbourne for the weekend.

I’ll be there.

Did last Saturday’s 150 on the stiff-hub bike and may do this Saturday’s 100 on it too but if I’m riding with The Girl, I’ll be on the tandem.

Unsupported rides cost $5 + $5 for non-members generally. The 300 has LOTS of food plus a support car, so +$20. Let the organiser know you are riding before Wed 3rd May.

By the way, Audax Oz is keen on riders having 2 sets of lights on the bike (2F+2R) and a reflective vest on any >=200km brevet. No lights, no ride. See somewhere in the depths of http://www.audax.org.au/pdf/docs/RideRules.pdf for details.

Did I ever tell you about the 1000 out Dalby direction in mid-June and how cold it got at 3am? Still not as cold as a March brevet in Suffolk, with bare legs…

Update on the winter blues, from audax;

Hi! Ryan, I would send you a entry form and a route sheet to save time on
the day. It is down as a t’mba ride but am giving thought to seeing if I can
move it to gatton area hopeing to get more Brisbane riders also warmer. If you contact me a couple of week before the event I will have the gatton route organised? then. Audax members & regestered racers $5 +$5
extra for nom members. Noel N.

I looked up the rules yesterday. Two lights should not be a problem as I have to get a new set for the fixie anyway (my commute is begining to get rather dark).

Anyone know a good place to get a reflective vest and some good quality reflective tape (eg 3M) in brisbane?

get the safety vest from the same workwear shop you get your overalls and blundstones.

the Winter Blues 100km event is fast approaching, on June 17th. Cannot confirm yet, but we may have a special quest joining us.

Can confirm, we will have a quest with us! OK, so who is keen?

Is that weekend a long weekend?

No, the long weekend is the 1000km brevet. I should be at both rides.

I should be right for the 100km. As to the 1000km, thats just plain crazy.

Gents, you should all have recieved an e-mail from me about this event. If you didn’t and your keen…send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will forward you one.

This Saturday, 8am start…out in Gatton or somewhere…

I expect it will start from the lake just to the west of Gatton (Apex Park?), the previous Gatton ride I rode started from there.

And the registration forms can be handed in on the day!

pity you won’t be getting a brevet card stamped in france for this one  haha maybe next time.
