Fulcrum wheels very tight tire fit

I just bought some Fulcrum wheels for my road bike and I tried to put two different brands of tires on them last night.
OMG- they are so damn tight fitting it’s ridiculous to the extent that I destroyed two tubes in the process. I was using Continental and Vittoria brands and the wheels are Racing 5 Evo’s.

What the hell should I do, because I cannot see myself on the side of the road getting the tires back on again.
Should I use a particular brand with Fulcrum?

Cheers, Horatio

Don’t use tyre levers when putting the tyre on? Work it on with your thumbs instead.

Kevlar beaded tyres usually stretch a bit more if you aren’t using them already.

(Good to see you’ve taken charge of your flats and are now causing them yourself)

Thanks for the tips.
They are so tight that I don’t think I can get them on with my hands. :expressionless:

Some of the companys have manuf. faults in there wheels and are 1mm bigger than usual. Thsi makes the tyre way tight to get on. I cant remember what wheels they were but i hadd the same problem and just ended up getting rid of the wheels as i was sick of punctures taking 15miniutes in the winter…

So I should get rid of my wheels?! I haven’t even used them yet though!

Lube.

Are the tyres new as well? If so give them a stretch by standing on the inside and pulling the opp. end towards you. I’ve found that helps with certain brands.

i had a similar problem with my shamals. give the tyres a stretch, maybe use a bit of wd40, and they’ll go on eventually.

Stretch the tyre and invest in some talcum powder. Works wonders  Doesnt leave oily residue and comes off with the wipe of a rag.

Sell your wheels. . . . or whatever CraigC says.

I had similar problems with Continental tyres on Campagnolo wheels. Ended up getting a Crank Bros speed lever. Works a charm every time

So the issue is not so much that the tire is tight against the rim, rather you just need the appropriate tools to stretch it on?

Silly rabbit, that’s why some people use Mavic Open Pro’s. Quit being a tighty whitey and buy some kevlar beaded tyres.

Is it too much to ask for the freaking tire diameter to match the wheel diameter? I know they’re Italian wheels…

Fulcrum user PDF thingy says something along the lines of “use a tyre that has 622 (ETRTO - European Technical Rim and Tyre Technical Organisation) on the side of said tyre”. And that the tyre is between 23 and 25 cross-section.

Thanks for the research effort Craig.
I’m assuming all modern 700c tires are made to 622 ETRTO though?

Buy one of these, or go to a shop which has one!

Park tool shop lever.

Once tyre is on, they should stretch out enough under pressure that you won’t need levers in the field… but I always take a couple with me.

Try some liquid dishwashing detergent on your fingers and give a super light coating to the remaining trouble section just to help it creep over the hooked section…

…failing that keep trying, tears are the best lube

that’s what she said.
