I don’t know if this is real snarking about Andy or not, maybe its all friendly, but it doesn’t really sound like it, and just in case it is, I’ll add my thoughts, especially for anyone new.
“Fyxo” is a champion, a champion family. You’re almost certainly kidding yourself if you think you’ve done more for getting people enjoying riding bikes in their daily living (which is free!) especially in Melbourne, than him/them.
The vibes I’m picking up here are “but you can do that on your own and get more out of it and you dont pay and its spiritual and special” can be applied to lots of other stuff. Lots of the shit that we all do for jobs is something that other people can do for free and even for fun, innit?
When was the last time people shouted down commuter/st cloud/giant sth yarra/abbotsford cycles/shifter/etc for charging to build a wheel or adjust a brake or install a crankset? We all know that’s piss easy and enjoyable when you know how, but also acknowledge that 1) some people don’t have the time or tools or knowledge and that’s fine and 2) even people with all of those things like to support others who are giving it a crack because we know it adds to the whole culture/landscape of bike lovers and its rad… We love those shops (i love those shops, anyway), but this thread is sounding like people don’t like it when someone is taking people out for a ride and providing some stuff for them, probably taking away some of the barriers stopping people starting out on their own, and probably setting them up for their own solo adventures later on. I don’t really understand it.

The price is pretty fair imo. Setting up a heap of tents is going to take ages, and cyclists eat a lot. I want to know how you convince logging trucks to take a day off though.

Well said JP. I can be up there with the best of the grouches at times, but this is awesome. One of the things I loved about Colombia was shit like that made it super easy to get out on a bike without having to stress about getting lost. I literally showed up, threw on a shit helmet and rode a flogged out old 26 mountain bike around.
I see this as a slightly more upmarket version of that, and frankly would probably need something like this as a first overnight because I’m fucking hopeless at anything that isn’t riding a bike in circles on a velodrome or sitting at a laptop working.
But yeah, that picture kinda sucks but people all fuck up, people on this forum have said really dumb shit and been called out and we all moved on. We don’t constantly remind them of it.

I don’t really know the dude, have had limited interactions (some poor customer service on his behalf once) but will definitely be guided by the people here who know him better.
Also - we all do say stupid shit, but people with an audience (and particularly a generally progressive audience such as cyclists) should know better than to use such imagery.
Thats the confederate flag, which (of course) is not something to celebrate or glorify.
I hadn’t seen it, but my guess that its something he made up for his bike, referencing the car General Lee from Dukes of Hazard, I think the original paint was about the colour of the car.
I’m happy he took that down quickly, but surely nobody believes that there was anything “south will rise again” behind it. (actually, I shouldn’t say “surely nobody”, “people who know him” is more like it, and I get that is the issue

Andy was a Dukes of Hazard fan, Google ‘Fyxo General Lee’ and you’ll get the idea. Unfortunately he’s let pop culture obscure past atrocities.
I do think, and in conjunction with the points above, a significant portion of his audience on instagram is in the US - where there is a much deeper meaning than we have for this flag here.

I took the dissing to be ironic to be honest.
My interactions with Andy have always been good. I have no probs with a local cyclist trying to make a buck out of cycling, and would prefer to support them than buy a BMC jersey or go on SBS l’etape where money goes back to ASO.
I don’t go on many paid rides, but this looks interesting for me so I think I will give it a go.
The target market does seem a bit strange tho, I expect most riders who have a gravel bike and an interest in this sort of route, would also have their own bikepacking / camping kit they would prefer to bring, rather than hire a tent.
I think it’s more that the company isn’t open source / slow to respond to suggestions than the cost that irriates me.
