New vittoria Graphene are getting great reviews
Thanks all. Seems in the gumwall department you either have a super nice tyre that will explode if it even looks at a piece of glass, or you have an indestructible tyre that is like riding on bricks and nothing in between.
Pete - yeah I might try your Cerfs, but I’m a fair way off yet.
I’ve read some good reviews on the Clement Strada.
There’s the Conti GP Classics too.
^ Yeah, I am keen to give the Clements a go.
Those Contis have the brown sidewall, yeah? They look a bit blurgh IMO.
Yeah the Contis are much darker than a regular gumwall.
I wonder if the Michelin Dynamic Classics are as horrendous as I read too, but maybe I’m blinded by their price.
Yeah they are horrendous.
Veloflex Masters are pretty cheap on PBK at the moment:
Bargain Clement Stradas at CRC:

Just got some 28mm gumwalls for $30.50ea. 25mm are $31ea
I just got 2 Vittoria graphenes from PBK delivered for $96 banger.
Is this whole graphene thing legit or marketing wank?
I don’t know Adz, but I’m here to ask another question that may go unanswered.
Soma Supple Vitesse… I’ve never wanted a tyre just for its name, and here I want it because of its name AND because I like the thought of running these tubeless for fast and comfy road riding. I’m daydreaming about riding on the road these days, for some reason. So has anyone used them? Anyone got them going tubeless? And what size did you use? Are they better than the compass equivalent?
As you know from my Rock 'n Road experience, and as I’ve seen from others using gumwalls set up tubeless, gumwalls tend to be very porous and leak sealant like a sieve. I’d avoid.
ah, right! but surely its not the colour, but the overlap of “thin, supple” with “gum”. Maxxis minion DHF seals up pretty well, for instance. But thats a moot point, cos I want to experience the supple. Has Seb sealed up the barlow pass?
GravelKing SK also catches my eye, experiences here?
Hey JP, yeah I sealed the Bon Jon Pass, they were not that hard once I got the tip to remove the valve core, so you can push a lot of air in to pop the beads in place.
I don’t really think they leak sealant more than others I know, I also have Nano’s which have leaked on me a couple times, always at a bad time. At least my compass tend to leak in the shed. IME some tires/setups require you to top up sealant often. Since I’ve started doing this I’m a lot more confident with my TL setups.
My gripe with Compass tyres is the flimsiness of their sidewalls - I’ve used mine on dirt a lot and did a few tears which I had to patch up to keep using them. I’m just over 2500 ks on mine and they’re almost done. I think they’re fantastic for mixed surface rides, fast everywhere and good off-road as long as it’s dry and not too gnarly.
The Vitesse are not given as tubeless aren’t they? The Gravelking SK are on my list of potential replacements, along with the tubeless version of the Clement X’Plor. Or another set of BJP. Or some Refuse’s. Choices!
Yeah, thats good to know! I’m thinking about a 90:10 sealed:dirt tyre, so BJP sound ok. Yes, you’re right about supple vitesse not being rated officially as tubeless ready, but even on the soma site they sort of intimate that its “technically not officially” tubeless, like, its fine tubeless, but we cant say it is. Maybe the big 50c version is? Anyway, I reckon I might try some. I have refuses on now, and theyre fine, they ping along nicely and seem tough but I’m keen to try the softies. Will report back with findings
Not gumwall, but I highly rate the 40c Schwalbe G-One. I happily ride up and down either side of Donna Buang on this tyre - tarmac or dirty - fast, grippy, relatively supple. And the ‘tubeless easy’ label is no lie - super easy to fit - no tyre levers or compressor needed and holds air right away.
Yeah, theyre an interesting tyre! How do they wear with that pimple tread?
Haven’t worn them down enough to say.
Well, today I got myself a set of x’plor 700x36. Wrong thread I guess. I came very close to get me some Schwalbe G-One.
I’ve been using the graphene Vittoria Corsa gumwalls on the road and I think they’re my favourite road tyres yet. Similar road feel to the Open Corsa Evo CXs they replaced, but a little more supple. They feel fast in a straight line, and surprisingly grippy in corners, possibly thanks to the longitudinal grooves - these are pretty deep and pressing with your thumb you can see the way the tread would distort with a side load. They look great too which always helps.
