Hetchins Super Special c1950

Just wait for a couple of weeks. It’s going to look 1000x better.

hows it lookin?

If i know Joe right, firstly it’s not going to be cheap. Secondly, he’s gunna have an epic tale to tell you when you walk in to pay. Clear at least four hours in your day when you go in. Nice bloke… Just doesnt know when to shut it.

Very sleek bike btw.

:expressionless: so confused right now

Decal issues have caused it to grind to a halt. One DT waterslide was fine, the other side went cloudy/weird when the clearcoat went on. Replacements being sourced.

I’m not picking it up in person, but I had a good chat when I dropped it off. The man does like to talk.

You certainly are lucky. I know I wasn’t that lucky.

It’s finished!

So it looks something like this, but with a headbadge and SSSInk DT decals:

Bigger

Very nice Blakey, well done, looks fuckn rad. What are you going to put on it?

fuggin gorgeous, will she get ridden? or hung up on the wall?

It’ll be a rider. Just not on rainy days.

Plan is for a 6/7speed friction drivetrain, Suntour Superbe parts where possible. I still need pedals & hubs but have HF Record & Sylvan as appropriate substitutes for now.

nice, im always curious as to how owners of such beautiful vintage machines view riding their steeds. The whole catch 22 of being able to ride something special, yet being at risk of damage.

Well, this bike has no provenance, its serial number was lost when the track ends were replaced with Campy 1010s and bottle cage mounts were added in the 80s.

As such I don’t feel like it deserves a 1940s period correct path racer build so have gone for a friction shifting road setup instead.

The only bikes that should be hung and admired are ones that have significant historical value, eg Eddy’s Hour bike. If you have to repaint / refinish, you may as well ride it as you’ve destroyed its ‘originality’.

Absolutely true. And although cost is an issue, if you’ve painted it once you can get it painted again. I’d rather see these bikes taken out on special occasions for all to enjoy then have them sitting in some stuffy garage for eternity.

good stuff fellas, i now regret letting go of my SwanSea

how much did the restoration(repaint and decals) cost all up?

theres a really good condition purple and gold hetchins for sale for $4000 in glen parker cycles in perth.

hetchins frames are works of art.

It’s a bike. It’s meant to be ridden. Just as if you bought a vintage car you’d drive it as otherwise you’d always be wondering at what it’d be like … sound, feel etc.

Older bikes, and very old bikes are actually less fragile than today’s stuff. They’re overbuilt, sturdy, made to last more than one lifetime. You can repair most old steel frames, parts is parts. The only thing limiting a steel road frame is the paint. That’s why most old steel frames have had a few paintjobs. Otherwise there’s nothing to stop your grandkids riding the same bike (unless they sell it for meth).

Carbon frames? As a mate of mine likes to say “There will be no such thing as vintage carbon bike gallery !!!”

i regret you didn’t let it go to me :stuck_out_tongue:

very nice rebuild man… gives my ideas on what to do with my SwanSea :stuck_out_tongue:

well done a great job.

Green with envy. Hetchins are pure sex!!
