Installing Tange_Seiki Headset

Attempted to do this today…was successful puttining the top and bottom cup in the frame but broke the ‘something something cone’ that goes right at the bottom of the forks
Was just tapping it gently and it snapped. Had loads of bearing grease etc
Could it be the extra thickness from the new 2-pac paint job?
Could I buy one of these seperately at LBS?

Shit!

Your little sumtin sumtin is a crown race.

I take it you didn’t use a crown race cutter (Eg Park CRC-1) to remove the paint, size the steerer, face the seating area etc? Abbotsford have one.

What were you installing it with btw?

It’s a bearing surface, so it’s hardened steel, very brittle, not ductile.

You should be able to source another race through a good LBS.

Multi-grips and a small hammer

Thanks for the info. Looked hard on the net before I started off but couldn’t find anything.
Only way to learn hey?

I love this site

Well there’s your other problem. You weren’t applying even force on the race when whacking it.

There is a specific tool for crown race & headset cup installation. You can DIY a cup press from threaded rod & mudguard washers, but the race tool you’re better off going to an LBS.

Next time ask first?

Or google something like “headset installation park tool”

Well you don’t know if you don’t know.
LBS is going to do it for me today.

Thanks everyone.
Should have 80% of bike done by tonight then

Have a look at Repair Help Articles | Park Tool next time. There’s lots of good how-to’s there.

LBS didn’t have any left over crown race things and was going to charge me $20 for a new headset…Ridgeways came to the party though for $5 and a lovely experience!!
Thanks

I installed the remainder of the forks last night but I’m still waiting for the stem…
I think the forks might be slightly longer than the headset by the 2-3 mm of thread showing…
Are there spacers that can be used?

Yeah just chuck a spacer on top instead of cutting things down especially if it’s only 2-3mm. Ridgeways will be able to help you out on that one too.

sorted… Bicycle Revolution
