I got an iPhone for work as a bonus at xmas time and have been looking around for iphone applications that relate to cycling. One of the better ones I have come across is ‘The Bike Computer’. It uses the GPS in the phone to track your route, measures elevation and speed (although, I am still yet to see how accurate these are). But the best thing about it is that once you have completed the route, you can upload it to a website called everytrails.com from there it maps out the route in google maps and then gives you a profile of speed and elevation. Check out the link to a ride I did earlier this year on my XC bike.
Has anyone else come across any other handy apps? There is a gear ratio calculator too… not worth paying for me.
Anyway, thought I would share it for anyone with a GPS or an iphone.
imapmyride is better IMHO… but thats partly because i like mapmyride (or mapmyrun or any of its other iterations) more, and a lot of my friends are on there so i can see what/where they have been riding.
well its not for the iphone, but i use nokia sports tracker for GPS on my n95.
tis pretty cool. can upload and overlay ride on map. it also shows you a map while you ride. there’s a live update feature that relays your location in real time to the sports tracker service where people can watch where are. one of the best features is the ‘ghost rider’ feature where you can race yourself from previous rides, and it tells you if you are infront or behind (and how much time/distance), and shows the relative positions on the map.
This is the Trails application. Downside is it doesn’t have a lock, so it will stop tracking you once you when the phone goes in to sleep mode. A way around this though is to turn the ipod on so the phone is playing music, then open up the application. As long as there is music playing the application will keep tracking.
Here is the profile of the ride in to work today (my first on my new bike too)
It is pretty damn accurate too, I measured it up against my bike computer and the distance was 6 meters off. Average speed I couldn’t measure as I had the phone tracking me for a bit while I put all my stuff on so there was about 3 minutes at the start where I was sorting myself out.
