Kiwi Brevet 2015

So I guess its just Mike, Scott, Tom and myself doing it from the FOAmafia now hey?

So how’s everyone’s planning and training going? I’m feeling pretty sorted (I think). Bike and gear is dialed in. Have done some monster days on the bike. Just need to work out the nutrition side of things (with emphasis on getting my recovery sorted).

For those not on instragram, here’s a shot from a big ride I did last week with some local riders. Riding the four MTB parks between Tauranga and Rotorua (200kms/3500m vert ascent). That was a fun ride, legs felt good.

FWIW the Revelate frame bags are awesome on singletrack. You hardly notice they’re even there! And Jones Loops are the shizz.

Nice one, Dan!

On Friday night user InspectorChimp and myself did an all nighter up Donna Buang via the dirt road. Did it on my road bike, but was able to test a few bits of gear I was still unsure about - mainly lighting.

Moon X Power 500 lasted 7 hours on low setting (set to medium only on descent) - I reckon it had another ~hour left… Not bad! Low setting was fine for Warby trail, climbing the dirt road etc. Mind you, I was riding next to Che with his dual ay-ups blasting lol. I’ll still purchase the Gloworm X2 as well though.

Bike and gear is dialed in (just need to figure out how I’m going to strap stuff to the front)

Have my Devonport>Hobart ride to really test my gear next week…

I’ll probably post my gear list/thoughts on here after I’ve completed the above ride.

Yup. I’m pretty sorted.

Did Chch->Blenheim along some of the brevet route in a couple of days after Xmas.

Made good time and gonna loose the cooking gear for the brevet.

Have to add some little stubby bar ends to give another hand position will look stupid with the 20° bend in the bars but hopefully comfy.

Gonna get in one more big ride in Melbs before i fly back.

Topomap madness

and there is some more info on the blog.

Dan, you see the start time is 10am not 12noon, flight gonna make it?

sw8

Yeah, I get in on Friday at 12:45pm. So yeah, plenty of time to land, put the bike together and take a relax. You coming on the morning sailing on the 31st? DANG! that’d be a long day.

Nope, arrive in Welly on the 29th, stay the night, 10:30 sailing on the 30th, stay in Blenheim, seems there is a ‘social’ on the Friday night, Time for a sit down breaky on the Sat before breifing at 8am.

Tasmania ‘training’ ride complete… ended up being about 550km in 3 days in similar conditions to what I’m guessing the brevet will be like.
Toughest riding I’ve done! Will post my thoughts/report a bit later I think.

Sounds solid tom.

I’m looking forward to it, hoping to get in a last decent training ride this weekend but have a bit of a cold so I’ll see how it goes.

Put some bar ends on the bends of my bars, i.e. half way in, looks terrible, hopefully comfy.

also it seems the organisers/entrants don’t understand; reply vs reply all and bcc vs cc.

I think I’ll do the same, as the one thing that killed me was extended road miles with crazy headwinds… yesterday I could only max 17km/h on the descents it was that bad.

Did lol at the emails too

I need to split up the supplied Brevet GPX file into smaller files. Can anyone recommend a GPX viewer and editor for Mac (10.10.1), in which I can easily do this?

Thanks in advance.
Dan

Try http://antocuc.github.io/GpxSplitter.html

Since GPX is just XML, you can probs just edit the file manually. With some vim magic, it would be easy enough if you knew the long/lat of each spot you wanted to split at. Let me know if you want me to split into ~180km partitions for you.

For those that want to follow our progress next week:

Garmin Basecamp can split GPXs and export.

I’ll be watching the spots enviously at work, GLHF everyone.

Thanks Zach. Just downloaded Basecamp now.

I’ll post some pics on the 'gram when I find myself in reception areas too ;D

Looking forward to following. Have a great ride guys!

Just done the tracks. Basecamp is great - pretty simple to use. Thanks for the heads up.

And FWIW those using an Edge 500, mine didn’t recognise the version of TCX which Basecamp exports, so I saved it as a GPX file and used an online convertor - AllTrails: Trail Guides & Maps for Hiking, Camping, and Running | AllTrails - to convert it to a Garmin TCX track file.

huh?!

there is a fire up near craigieburn on the route…

also, looks like it’ll be a bit moist on the ride.

^Probs some #coffeeoutside action gone awry - eh Ezy?

yep. :-/

Just saw that AUS MTB marathon champ (and maybe 24 solo champ at one point) Ed McDonald is doing the brevette. He logs some crazy rides back here in Canberra so interested to see how he goes.

What do you reckon - he’ll do it in 36-38hrs or so?

Keep an eye out for Dave Sharpe (aka Restroom Raider) - he completed last year’s Brevet in 3 days 6 hrs 50 mins!! …
and Steven Butterworth (Biker_Boh) too.
