Lockring has come loose

Hi folks,

On my way down a hill the other day going at a walking pace (braking with my legs), and my legs suddenly whipped around about a 1/4 of a crank. Applying downward force on the pedals tightened things back up again, but braking/accelerating kept causing things to slip.

On closer inspection, I found my lockring could be unscrewed by hand. From reading around on the forum, I get the impression that it doesn’t need to be super tight, but that it should be tightened beyond hand-tight using a lockring tool. Is that correct?

Also, why might this have happened? Do lockrings loosen over time and require regular tightening? It’s a pretty lightweight / cheap lockring (stock with the bike, a Mongoose Maurice).

Cheers,

Nathan

Never had one loosen over time - only similar experience was having my rear cog come loose as I came off the boards caused by back pedalling (I don’t run a lockring on my track bike). Made sure it was fairly tight after that.

Sounds like yours is too loose.

screwdriver + hammer = win.

No. Put the cog on nice and tight (rotafix or chain whip). Then put lockring on plenty tight.
