Merz for Merz ...

Jim Merz posted this up on the CR list and I thought it was cool and interesting and that some of you might also appreciate his take on things when he rebuilt an old frame of his and got it rolling with some classic era parts. Jim was happy to have it re-posted here but he did mention he puts everything up on his facebook page (Merz Bicycles) anyway if anyone is interested.

So I got out on my newly built up Merz bike today. This frame was sold to
me over a year ago by a CR lister and when I got it turns out it is my
daily rider from the 1970’s! By the way, thanks everyone on the list who
helped me get it all together. And Ed Litton who did a fine paint job on
it.

My ride today was just a little 15 miler on highway 1 out to the lighthouse
at Point Sur. I had a few observations:

  1. The feel of the bike was very nice. Quiet, the first time in many years
to hear the unique sound of high end tubular tires.

  2. Shift levers on the down tube take a little getting used to, fiddling to
    get centered.

  3. I was amazed at how hard it is to get my feet in the clips. Once my feet
are in the feel is great.

  4. The Brooks Pro saddle (from the old days) feels really good. I love it!

  5. Pedaling feel is wonderful, not a bit of compromise compared to a modern
    bike.

  6. Wheels are great. I have Mavic SSC rims with only 28 spokes per wheel.
These wheels feel as good as my super expensive modern clinchers with
    carbon rims.

  7. Of course the bike fits me, I made it to do that. The old style handle
bars and brake levers are not quite as ergonomic as modern stuff, but not
    that bad.

  8. Gear range is way too limiting on this bike, although this freewheel is
what I would have used back in the day. Also if I go to a larger range
freewheel then the jump between gears will be a problem. I need to totally
change my pedalling style to do any hills with a 42-21 low, and get a lot
    stronger!

  9. Not noticeable at all until the hills, but this thing is heavy! I need
to lose about 20 pounds I know.

  10. Overall well balanced stiffness, stable, comfortable ride.

  11. Looks pretty terrific I think.

Oh, Jim also mentioned that he’s building up a new bike and needs some parts to make it complete … if anyone gotz pm me for his details - or - hit him up on the facebooks.

I am going to make another Merz frame. It will be a sprint track bike with 1" chain! I don’t have very much of this, I really need the chainring, a 23t or 24t and the 165 arms.

Anyway, I’m a big fan of what he has done and still does. Just thought to share …
