Course description
The last ride was pretty hilly so we thought we’d turn things upside down and make this one completely flat. Too easy, you say? Where’s the challenge, you’re thinking? The hint is in the name - Winds Of Pain.
We’ll head out west this time to the Werribee Plains. From the civilized cafe precinct of Williamstown we’ll roll out through the industrial areas of Altona North and then keep rolling until the huge distribution warehouses and four-lane truck roads give way to busted wind-blown gravel, corrugated single-lane dirt, and a big big horizon that stretches out in all directions as far as the eye can see.
It’s an “out and back” course this time and the roads are straight, flat and long so it’ll be very different from the previous rides. You’ll be able to see each other a lot more on the course and there’ll be plenty of opportunity to group up and work together against the wind. Echelon anyone?
Generally this area gets wind from the north and west. This means you’ll most likely be riding into the wind on the way out and then you’ll get to hammer it all the way back to Williamstown with the wind at your back. When we reconned the course we were pushing 40km/hr on the way back without even trying. Fun!
Oh, and singlespeeders… choose wisely.

See the angle of this grass and the road stretching way off into the distance? You’ll be chewing on your bartape.

Riding into the wind

But once you’re on the return leg, you’ll be FLYING in the big ring!

Heading back with the wind, flying over the gravel.

Down like a clown.

getting in on Phil’s vibe

This sounds brutal.
I am in.
Le Fujima is gonna get a proper WORKOUT

42:18?!
Looking forward to this!

Got two freewheels? Flip the flop at the turnaround point.

Hub is threaded on one side only, I’ll just take two chainrings/chains!

If you called it ‘Winds of Fun’ I might be interested.
Don’t think I’m epic enough for this…

Don’t be meh Horatio. Come and roll an echelon with NickR/Pete/SteveRat…

Sorry wasn’t trying to sound meh. I’ll put it in the diary!

In.

In… This sounds like a more of a fat tire beater roadie than cyclocross ride… At least I won’t be on the SS this time!

Gonna smash it like Bobki…

Jam the fattest slicks you can into your CX bike and you’ll be laughing. Resist Nomads, Grand Bois Cerfs, Panaracer Paselas, Schwalbe Big Apples…

what about 28’s on my sweet SONIC BOOM roadie?

Yeah, Is 25’s on a roadie ok?
I’m dead keen to do this, but want gears.

You’ll be able to do it, you just won’t be as comfortable as someone on fatter rubber. Some careful line picking will get you through a section where the surface is bad, the rest is gravel or tarmac.

Fuck being careful, I need an excuse to buy new wheels.

hey dylan, your current wheels look shit.

there ya go mate
